The Recruit Season 1, which was released on Netflix in December 2022, went on to become one of the streamer’s top hits. Inspired by Adam Ciralsky, a successful writer, filmmaker and attorney for the CIA, the series was created by Alexi Hawley. In its eight-episode debut season, The Recruit plunged viewers into a world of international conflict, betrayal, manipulation and action.
Starring Noah Centineo as Owen Hendricks, the narrative of Season 1 saw a rookie lawyer get involved in matters much above his paygrade. The action-packed first season threw twist after twist at audiences and ended on a major cliffhanger. Now that the release of The Recruit Season 2 is finally mere days away, here’s everything you need to remember about Season 1.
Owen’s Graymail Duty Leads to His Entanglement in International Conflicts
The Recruit opens to Owen being charged with graymail duty by his coworkers, Lester and Violet, who are determined to see him fail. However, their objective in dumping their graymail on Owen backfires when this seemingly menial task propels Owen into the thick of action.
As Owen goes through the piles of unread mail, he comes across a letter written by a Russian woman being held at the Phoenix prison for the murder of a truck driver. The woman, a former Russian asset, threatens to leak classified information that could damage the reputation of the CIA unless she is exonerated of her crimes. After verifying that the details provided in the letter are, in fact, valid, Owen takes the letter to his boss. The single act changes Owen’s career at the CIA and instead of remaining the rookie, Owen is pushed out into the field and ends up entangled in international politics.
Owen Faces Situations That Make Him Want to Leave the CIA
Despite joining the agency as a lawyer, Owen is thrown into multiple combat situations. From being roughed up when he travels to Yemen to meet Dawn Gilbane, to being attacked by cartel members when he attempts to retrieve a bag as instructed by Max and having to jump off a bridge to save his life when he is once again pursued by assailants, Owen’s career in the CIA demands much more than what his law degree equips him with.
Despite persevering, Owen reaches his limits when he is forced to kill a man in order to save Max from being shot when her meeting with Lev goes sideways. Unable to bear the effects of the murder and after witnessing the bloodshed first-hand, Owen announces that he wants nothing to do with Max or the agency. Max does all she can to make Owen stay, even pulling a gun on him, but he walks away. Max, proving the complicated relationship that exists between the duo, then calls Dawn and tells him that the lawyer is a problem, implying that they need to get rid of Owen.

Here are ten reasons why you should check out The Recruit on Netflix.
Xander Goi Is Killed
Xander Goi is introduced to viewers in the second episode of the series, and is a CIA agent stationed in Vienna. Goi is killed at the end of the seventh episode of The Recruit. He arrives at Max and Owen’s hotel room but instead of finding the duo, he is attacked and killed by an assassin whose identity remains unknown.
Although Goi’s killer remains anonymous, Owen is of the notion that Goi was killed because Max revealed his identity to Kirill, a high-ranking member of the Council with whose wife Goi was sleeping. Max hands Kirill photographic evidence of Goi’s affair with Kirill’s wife in a bid to obtain the necessary funds to secure her return to her home country. This assumption is dismissed by Max, who claims that although she expected Kirill to exact his revenge, the timing did not make sense. The assassin arrived too quickly after she made the deal with Kirill, meaning that the assassin was meant for her and Owen, and Goi was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Max’s Daughter Is Alive
In episode 5 of The Recruit, it is revealed that Max had a daughter. However, when Owen says that he didn’t know Max was a mother, Max replies that she was, implying that her daughter is no longer alive. Owen clearly feels sympathy for Max, and it appears as though this confession leads to a more personal connection between the duo. Owen and Max also come across a picture of Max and her daughter when the safe deposit box is opened at the bank and Max tells Owen that her daughter’s name was Karolina.

However, despite the implication that her daughter was no longer alive, Max comes face-to-face with her daughter in the final episode of the series, when both she and Owen are abducted. To Owen’s shock, he knows Karolina as Nichka, and had previously flirted with her at a bar. Karolina had assumed the name Nichka Lashin, a mafia lieutenant, and had been tracking Owen and Max since their arrival in Europe with the intent of stopping them from exposing Kirill.
Max Is Shot in the Season Finale
In what is perhaps the most shocking plot twist of the series, Max is shot by her daughter in the season finale of The Recruit. Max only has time to look at her daughter and utter the name “Karolina,” before Karolina turns her steely gaze onto Max. Demonstrating that she is just as lethal as her mother, an emotionless Karolina fires a bullet at Max’s chest from close range.
Max played an imperative role throughout Season 1 of The Recruit. Given her criticality to the plot of the series, her apparent death was completely unanticipated. Whether Max actually dies, or miraculously survives the close-range gunshot, is one of the most pressing questions that viewers want answered in Season 2. If Max really did die, how will the series progress without her?
The Recruit Season 2 is scheduled for release on Netflix on January 30, 2025.
