Coming to Prime Video on March 11, 2026, is Scarpetta, a new police procedural starring the Oscar-winning likes of Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis. Based on the bestselling crime novel series from acclaimed author Patricia Cornwell, the show will focus on Kay Scarpetta (Kidman), a talented forensic pathologist who uses her keen observational skills to solve a slew of grisly crimes.
With David Gordon Green (Halloween 2018) helming the first two episodes and a stellar supporting cast that includes Bobby Cannavale, Simon Baker, and Ariana DeBose, Scarpetta has a prestigious pedigree sure to rival the mega-popular Prime Video procedurals like Jack Ryan and Reacher. With enough source material to remain on the air for the foreseeable future, Scarpetta may battle Bosch for Prime Video supremacy when it premieres this March.
‘Scarpetta’ Is Based on Real-Life Chief Medical Examiner Marcella Farinelli Fierro
Created by Liz Sarnoff (Alcatraz), Scarpetta is a police procedural crime series premiering on Prime Video on March 11, 2026. Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman portrays Kay Scarpetta in the thriller, the main character featured in 29 novels written by bestselling author Patricia Cornwell (via USA Today).
In turn, Kay Scarpetta is based on Marcella Farinelli Fierro, the former real-life Chief Medical Examiner for the state of Virginia from 1994 to 2008. One of the first women to be certified as a forensic pathologist by the American Board of Pathology (via CF Medicine), Fierro gained a sterling reputation for her crime-solving tactics using advanced forensic technology.
The main character in 29 novels and counting, published since 1990, Scarpetta will not follow one or two books per season as Prime Video’s Bosch did during its popular seven-season run. Instead, elements from various novels will be incorporated to tell a new tale altogether. The trailer begins in 1990 and flashes forward to the present, with Rosy McEwen playing a young Kay and Amanda Righetti as a young Dorothy.
Throughout the novels, Scarpetta’s professional exploits include serving as Virginia’s Chief Medical Examiner, moving to Florida to become a pathology consultant and head of the National Forensic Academy, acting as a freelance forensic expert in South Carolina, and serving as a medical examiner in Boston who lives in New York.
In addition to Kidman headlining as Kay Scarpetta, Jamie Lee Curtis plays Kay’s irresponsible sister, Dorothy Farinelli. Dorothy’s brilliant daughter, Lucy Farinelli-Watson, is portrayed by Ariana DeBose (West Side Story). Bobby Cannavale plays Scarpetta’s close detective ally, FBI Agent Pete Moreno, and Simon Baker plays her love interest, former FBI profiler Benton Wesley.
‘Scarpetta’ Is Poised To Surpass ‘Reacher’ and ‘Jack Ryan’ as Prime Video’s Best Procedural
With three Oscar winners leading the cast (Kidman, Curtis, and DeBose), Scarpetta has a prestigious caliber of acting, surely poised to rival the performances of Prime Video’s Reacher and Jack Ryan. Not to besmirch Alan Ritchson and John Krasinski, but Kidman and Curtis bring decades of top-tier cinematic experience that the others glaringly lack.
Coupled with David Gordon Green’s directorial acumen shown in early works like All the Real Girls and George Washington, Scarpetta is in better creative hands than any gritty Prime Video crime drama this side of Bosch. Charlotte Brändström (Shōgun) is also slated to direct.
Moreover, with a seemingly endless well of source novels to pluck from, Scarpetta will almost certainly rival the longevity of literary crime adaptations like Bosch, Reacher, and Jack Ryan. As long as Kidman is interested in playing the lead role, Scarpetta could easily become Prime Video’s most compelling crime thriller of all time.
To this end, Scarpetta has already been ordered for two seasons, each featuring eight episodes. The entire first season is expected to air on Prime Video on March 11, 2026, making for an ideal binge-watch.
