Almost a decade after the script first landed on The Black List, and two years after entering production, Paramount has at last unleashed the first trailer for Brad Pitt’s survival action thriller, Heart of the Beast. Reuniting Pitt with Fury director David Ayer, the adventure flick follows the Academy Award winner as a former soldier who finds himself fighting his way back to civilization after an accident. And, of course, he’s bringing his trusted dog with him.
The brutal survival story finds Pitt and his loyal German Shepherd living off the grid, with the actor starring as a former Army Special Forces soldier who “must return to civilization after his small plane crashes deep in the Alaskan wilderness,” via Variety. Debuting the footage at CinemaCon, Pitt will give a “haunted performance” in the picture, “as a man struggling with PTSD.” But, as is so often the case in these man-and-dog stories, the pooch emerges as the real hero, with the fearless canine protecting Pitt from “from bears, wolves and other beasts.”
The rest of the footage teases the epic journey to come, as Pitt and his pooch have to climb over “dizzying mountain peaks and ford raging rivers” as they desperately fight to stay alive and make it out of the wilderness. “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight that matters, it’s the size of the fight in the dog,” Pitt tells his dog in the trailer. “I’m going to get you home. We just have to do this the hard way.” Based on what we now know, “the hard way” may be putting it lightly.
Directed by David Ayer and written by Cameron Alexander, Brad Pitt not only stars but also produces Heart of the Beast alongside Babylon and La La Land director Damien Chazelle, with the rest of the cast including J. K. Simmons (Whiplash) and Anna Lambe (True Detective).
Heart of the Beast has remained oddly mysterious since being announced back in 2024, with the script itself having been a hot property since 2017. Despite starring one of Hollywood’s biggest veteran superstars in Brad Pitt, little had been revealed about the project, with not even an official image being released in the time since. Thankfully, we now know that Heart of the Beast is very real, and should provide Pitt with plenty of room to demonstrate why he has remained one of the most exciting A-listers for so many years as he takes the lead as a tortured man battling to simply survive. Heart of the Beast has not yet been given a specific release date, but will debut in fall 2026.
