‘Dutton Ranch’ Episode 5 Kills Off Character in Tragic Twist

Dutton Ranch has been breaking streaming records at Paramount+ while serving as an impressive replacement for Yellowstone. After Beth, Rip, and Carter are forced to leave their new ranch following a wildfire, they set up at a cattle ranch in Texas. While in South Texas, the family quickly realizes they are now the underdogs, facing the 10 Petal Ranch’s notorious matriarch, Beulah Jackson, who has her own Rip-like fixer, Joaquin. The first season of Dutton Ranch has already offered its share of tragedy; in fact, many viewers still aren’t over Episode 4’s heart-wrenching cow slaughter.

Episode 5 offers a different brand of surprises, as reported in People. Spoilers below:

As Carter continues his escapades with Beulah’s daughter, Oreana, he takes her to see Dwight on his ranch with his jaguar and a seemingly endless supply of beer. One evening, as Carter is helping Dwight with chores, law enforcement comes rushing onto the property with sirens blazing. Carter is clueless as to why the cops are coming in so aggressively, and Dwight takes off on foot. The local police chase down Dwight and shoot him in the back. It was clear murder. Carter was a witness, but must swear to keep silent or face jail.

Dwight was arguably the most likable character on Dutton Ranch. It seems he knew a lot about the town and the people in it, as well as where more than a few skeletons were buried. The sheriff told Carter that Dwight was “a drunkard, an insurance fraudster and a thief” who “stole from the sick and elderly.” Maybe there’s more we’ll learn about Dwight’s past as the series continues.

Episode 5 opens with Beth and Rip looking at the sunrise on a ranch without a herd. In a strange turn of events, Everett suggests Rip help Beulah on her ranch while the Dutton Property is in a state of rebuilding. As expected, Rip goes into the 10 Petal bunkhouse and quickly has all the ranch hands moving. Rip quickly smells the stench of foul play, which is no surprise considering he had recently discovered a body discarded from the ranch.

Beth reintroduces herself to Beulah, who becomes intrigued with Beth’s tenacity and business savvy. A Dutton on a mission, Beulah respects Beth’s vision to turn the 10 Petal ranch into a luxury brand. “A cockroach after an atomic bomb” is how Beulah describes Beth to a demoted Joaquin. When asked if she could put the Dutton name on the new brand, Beth quickly made clear her name wasn’t for sale.

“Not sure I’m meant for peace,” Beth tells her ranch hand Zachariah early in the episode. At this point, it’s clear that peace is not on the table for the rest of the season, no matter how much Beth and Rip deserve it.
