Godzilla’s 10 Most Powerful Enemies, Ranked

As a kid growing up smashing Godzilla figurines together, the modern resurgence in popularity for the world’s most famous monster is well beyond even my dizziest daydreams. Every few months there is some kind of new Godzilla project coming out, whether it’s a comic series, a video game release, or the latest epic live-action movie from either Toho or Legendary. Godzilla fans are eatin’ good, as they say, and I’ve been feasting right along with the rest of the world.

As exciting as every new Godzilla project is, perhaps the most important part of each project is who, or what, Godzilla is squaring off against. In the past, he’s tangled with everything from the Avengers to a kaiju-sized Charles Barkley (yes, really), so seeing a new iteration of one of Godzilla’s classic foes or a brand-new monster come into the ring is just as exhilarating as seeing Big G himself. More often than not, Godzilla comes out on top, but his most powerful cinematic enemies have taken him to the edge—some of them more than once.

Why You Should Trust Me: I am Movie Web’s preeminent Godzilla expert, with more than 30 years of unconditional love for Big G in my heart. I’m well-acquainted with every iteration of the world’s most famous monster, from the family-friendly, rubber-suited hero of the Showa Era to the grim nuclear nightmare of Godzilla Minus One. While Godzilla is my King of the Monsters, I’m also an expert on the ever-shifting statuses of his greatest allies and most deadly enemies.

10

Biollante

The plant beast was born from Godzilla’s own cells.

Biollante is a science experiment gone terribly wrong, as the plant-monster hybrid is the result of gene splicing Godzilla’s cells with the cells of a rose (and the cells of the scientist’s dead daughter, for what it’s worth). In its initial “flower beast” state, Biollante’s encounter with Godzilla goes exactly the way you would think a plant monster’s battle against a fire-breathing death lizard would go. However, the resurgent “plant beast” form boasts enormous size, a seething nest of biting, piercing, constricting tendrils, and a radioactive acidic sap that she coats Godzilla with. Godzilla eventually beats her with his atomic breath, but Biollante put him through the wringer first.

9

Kong

The ultra-smart ape actually beat Godzilla decades ago.

Godzilla has battled two different versions of Kong, each with their own strengths. Naturally, they share a weakness against Godzilla’s atomic breath, but both the 1962 King Kong and Legendary’s massive alpha Titan Kong put Godzilla on the ropes thanks to their incredible physical strength and the ingenuity of a mammalian brain. ’62 Kong also gets the inexplicable ability to absorb electricity from lightning for super-charged punches, while the modern Kong wields a massive axe and electrically charged “B.E.A.S.T. gauntlet” augmentation on his arm. King Kong technically beat Godzilla in 1962 (although that’s up for debate among experts), and the modern Godzilla has certainly taken his lumps from his situational ally/enemy as well.

8

Battra

The dark reflection of Mothra was a vengeful defender of the Earth.

Battra only showed up once, in the 1992 Toho movie Godzilla vs. Mothra, but he made his presence felt. The darker, more aggressive version of Mothra’s peaceful protector, Battra boasts a large and vicious larva form that fires beams from a horn on its forehead and is capable of battering Godzilla both in and out of the water. Battra’s flying imago form is even deadlier, and is capable of shooting purple “prism beams” from his eyes for maximum damage. Battra is even capable of withstanding Godzilla’s atomic blast to some degree, although the King of the Monsters does vanquish him in the end with an old-fashioned neck chomp.

7

Shimo

The ancient ice Titan is one of the Monsterverse’s most powerful creatures.

Shimo isn’t a villainous monster in the same fashion as many of the other creatures on this list. The hulking ice dragon is tortured into doing Skar King’s bidding, which is the only reason she and Godzilla come to blows in the first place. Although they eventually join forces against the evil ape, Shimo demonstrates why she’s considered one of the most powerful Titans to ever walk the Monsterverse, as her frost bite blast is capable of triggering a global ice age and doing irreparable damage to other Titans (as Kong discovers). Shimo is even canonically repsonsible for freezing Ghidorah in Antarctica, if you need an extra measure of her power.

6

Gigan

The bladed cyborg has drawn blood on Godzilla on many occasions.

The Godzilla: Final Wars versions of Gigan are undoubtedly two of the coldest monster designs in Toho’s history, and Gigan’s ability to inflict damage warrants that aura. Between supersonic flight, a literal arsenal of sharp edges on his body, and a deadly laser eye in the middle of his head, Gigan has the weapons to take Godzilla on head-to-head. He’s drawn more blood on Godzilla than almost any other foe, and while Godzilla typically gets the best of the space cyborg in the end, Gigan has always been framed as a deadly and powerful opponent.

5

SpaceGodzilla

Godzilla’s cosmic doppelgänger has an impressive array of deadly abilities.

SpaceGodzilla’s sheer volume of weaponized abilities would have him far higher on this list if not for the fact that he wears his two biggest weaknesses prominently on his body. Blasts to his shoulder crystals render him all but useless, but if they’re intact, he’s one of the most dangerous monsters Godzilla’s ever faced. He has the ability to manipulate the crystals around him for weapons and protection, along with a list of energy blasts that he can dispel from different parts of his anatomy. Godzilla needed a ton of help to beat SpaceGodzilla the only time they’ve ever squared off, and it seems like he may again if SpaceGodzilla does turn out to be the villain of Godzilla X Kong: Supernova as is currently rumored.

4

Hedorah

The Smog Monster takes Godzilla to the brink of death in his debut.

Hedorah might look goofy to the untrained eye, but those familiar with Godzilla’s history know that he’s one of the most powerful enemies Godzilla’s ever faced. As Hedorah evolves through his different forms, he displays an array of terrifying abilities, including the “Hedrium Ray”, a laser blast from his massive red eye, a sulfuric acid mist that his flying form sprays over Godzilla (killing hundreds of humans in the process of his flight), and the toxic sludge that comprises his whole body. Godzilla was almost killed by Hedorah, drowned and burned in a pile of that sludge, and even had the skin on his hand burned down to the bone upon attempting to punch Hedorah’s body. The Smog Monster is one of the rumored villains for Godzilla Minus Zero, which could bring a new and terrifying version to life.

3

Mechagodzilla

Godzilla’s robotic archenemy does serious damage every time they battle.

Mechagodzilla has been one of the most powerful enemies Godzilla has ever faced in virtually every appearance, dating back to his 1973 debut in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. While his ability to fly is useful, Mechagodzilla is at his most dangerous when he is standing in one place just unloading his array of weaponry on Godzilla. Different versions of the robot have displayed different abilities, and more than one has pushed Godzilla to the brink of death. Throw in the ability to often (not always) tank Godzilla’s atomic breath, and Mechagodzilla is an unquestionably powerful enemy for the King of the Monsters.

2

King Ghidorah

The three-headed space dragon is the Joker to Godzilla’s Batman.

Mechagodzilla is a close second, but Godzilla’s real archrival has always been the space dragon King Ghidorah. The three-headed alien has come in many shapes and sizes over his 60-year history, but he almost always feels unstoppable upon arriving on Earth. The most powerful iteration is likely the bipedal Monster X version from Godzilla: Final Wars, which was really the quadrupedal Keizer Ghidorah in disguise, but Legendary’s version is not far behind. King Ghidorah’s devastating gravity beams, ability to manipulate gravity, and immense strength have always provided plenty of challenge for Godzilla, and usually warrants the involvement of multiple monsters to bring him down.

1

Destoroyah

The ever-evolving embodiment of the Oxygen Destroyer devastates all in its path.

1995’s Godzilla vs. Destoroyah was intended to be a sort of endpoint for Godzilla so that Tristar could attempt their ill-fated version of the atomic lizard, and Destoroyah certainly feels like the “final boss” when he arrives in his perfect form for the final battle. Born from the blast of the Oxygen Destroyer weapon that killed the original 1954 Godzilla, Destoroyah not only drives Godzilla to the edge of death as he suffers from an atomic meltdown, but he outright kills Godzilla’s son, Godzilla Junior. His Micro-Oxygen Beam is devastating to Godzilla, as is the Variable Slicer energy knife that Destoroyah projects from his head. Godzilla triumphs at the end, but only with help from humanity, and Destoroyah remains the most powerful enemy that Godzilla has ever faced on the big screen.
