In recent years, Netflix has significantly expanded its library with a number of remakes, reboots, and live-action adaptations, putting a fresh spin on beloved tales for a modern audience. Last year, the streaming juggernaut greenlit a dark, live-action feature adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic 1931 French gothic novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, a 195-year-old historical epic masterpiece that was famously popularized on screen by Walt Disney Pictures in 1986 when the studio released an animated musical version of the tragic tale about a kind-hearted bell-ringer confined to a cathedral tower by his cruel adoptive father.
At the time, the project was announced under the working title of Quasimodo, taking its name from the book’s protagonist, but a new update has revealed the official title – and it is certain to have fans singing from the rooftops. Netflix’s iteration of the classic story will offer a bold new take on the source material viewed through a slightly darker lens, but it is still expected to retain the heart of the original, and the newly unveiled title supports that, as revealed by a placeholder page for the movie that recently appeared on Netflix.
As reported by What’s on Netflix, the forthcoming adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame is now officially titled Quasimodo, the Soul of Paris. The added phrase carries deep meaning rooted in Hugo’s masterpiece novel, as in the original text, the author explicitly describes Quaismodo as the spiritual life force of the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris where he resides and looks out over the city. According to the logline for the film, the retelling will draw inspiration from the real-life figure who became the basis of the famous novel.

Vincent Cassel is taking on the lead role of the tragic historical figure. He is widely considered one of the greatest French actors of all time, often praised for his portrayals of morally ambiguous characters. He gained international fame for his breakout role in the gritty drama La Haine, but has since delivered notable performances in major Hollywood blockbusters and acclaimed features such as Black Swan, Eastern Promises, and the Ocean’s franchise. His television work includes a series regular role in the third season of HBO’s Westworld, as well as the Apple TV+ spy thriller Liaison and the Netflix comedy miniseries Fiasco.
He is reuniting with filmmaker Jean-François Richet for Quasimodo, the Soul of Paris, following their previous collaborations on critically acclaimed projects like the two-part crime epic Mesrine, the biographical thriller The Emperor of Paris, and the comedy-drama One Wild Moment. Richet is helming the Netflix adaptation from a script written by Éric Besnard and Edgar Marie, and given his history with high-stakes, action-driven narratives, having previously directed Gerard Butler and Mike Colter in the pulsating 2023 thriller Plane, audiences should expect a much more grounded story of survival than Disney’s family-friendly iteration.
