A wildfire that broke out near Canyon Road late on Friday forced mandatory evacuations across a wide swath of Logan, including areas near Utah State University, and prompted overnight road closures. Officials began lifting some restrictions on Saturday morning.
Fire Sparks Late-Night Evacuations
The blaze began near 600 East and Canyon Road, triggering a mandatory evacuation order for a 1-mile radius issued just before 11:30 p.m. on Friday, according to the Logan City Police Department. Within the hour, officials expanded the zone to a 1.5-mile radius from the same intersection. Displaced residents without shelter were directed to a church in Logan.
By 1:30 a.m., police cleared residents living on the Utah State University (USU) campus to return home, while everyone else inside the 1.5-mile radius remained barred from their houses. Fifteen minutes later, officials reiterated that no one outside the campus exception was cleared to return, with further updates promised in the morning.
Just before 2 a.m., authorities closed 400 North, also known as U.S. 89, between 400 East and 1500 East until further notice. An overnight shelter opened at 3 a.m. at Green Canyon High School, 2960 Wolf Pack Way, North Logan, for residents inside the evacuation zone apart from those on USU’s campus.
Evacuations Gradually Scaled Back
As Saturday progressed, officials narrowed the footprint of the mandatory order. At 8 a.m., police said fire personnel were assessing conditions near homes still under evacuation. Twenty minutes later, the department confirmed the order remained active between U.S. 89 and Canyon Road, spanning 1100 East to 1600 East, while lifting evacuations for all areas south of Canyon Road. Rudy’s Green House and Herm’s Inn remained closed as of that update.
