‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ Finds New Streaming Home

Prime Video heads into August with what may be its busiest month of the year so far. The biggest new arrival is the fourth season of Reacher, which premieres Aug. 12, though Ted Lasso arriving on Prime Video for the first time on Aug. 1 isn’t far behind in terms of potential viewer attention. The movie lineup is stacked too, with everything from The Brutalist to the full Mummy series landing throughout the month.

In a month this crowded, a big catalog addition can easily slip by unnoticed, which would be a shame in at least one case. Arriving early in the schedule, on Aug. 2, is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024), the most recent entry in one of the longest-running sci-fi film franchises of all time. The modern Apes films have been impressively consistent, and Kingdom had perhaps the hardest job of the bunch.

The latest sequel in the series had to prove it could survive without Caesar, the character played by Andy Serkis and the emotional core of the previous three films. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes previously streamed on Prime as an exclusive in August 2025, when it ranked among the service’s best offerings that month. The film is an easy recommendation, and an easy one to sample now that it’s bundled into a subscription many people already have. Directed by Wes Ball of Maze Runner fame, it jumps generations past the Caesar trilogy that ran from 2011 to 2017, following a young ape named Noa as a self-styled king twists Caesar’s legacy.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was well-received by critics, and currently holds an 80% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. While that’s a step below the remarkable notices the Reeves-era films earned, it’s a healthy number for a fourth entry in a reboot cycle. Before the film’s release, Ball mentioned that although Kingdom was conceived as a standalone movie, the creative team had ideas about where they wanted to go in terms of a trilogy, and the studio seemed to be on board. A sequel was officially confirmed by Disney’s 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell, who told The Hollywood Reporter:

“And so that idea is to be able to say, ‘Okay, we know when the Avatar movies are coming. We know now about Predator. There’ll be another Apes in ’27, let’s just say.'”

Ball has also made no secret of his appetite for more. “Yeah, we’re talking about it. That’s all I can say, really. But I’m greedy,” he told Collider when asked about the follow-up. In the meantime, a fresh Prime Video window puts Kingdom back in front of the audience Disney will need in theaters when the next installment arrives next year.
