Two adults were found fatally shot on Wednesday morning inside an apartment in Pittsburgh, where four children were also discovered unharmed, officials said.
Dispatchers notified officers while they were en route that multiple calls had been received reporting gunfire and possible victims at the location.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a man and a woman inside a unit on the second floor suffering from gunshot wounds. Both adults were pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
Investigators did recover multiple shell casings at the scene. Officials said damage indicated that some of the shots had been fired outside the apartment, where detectives believe the shooting initially began.
Authorities have also not shared how the two adults were connected, including their relationship to the children.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional details have been released about what may have led up to the incident, such as a possible motive. However, officials said the shooting appeared to stem from a domestic dispute, and detectives are examining whether the incident was a murder-suicide.
“Witnesses did disclose to police that there was some kind of domestic altercation prior to the shooting taking place,” Bourne told reporters on Wednesday. “Again, what that level of specificity is in terms of the relationship between the two is still unclear.”
An official cause and manner of death have not yet been released, and the names of the children have not been made public.
Officials assured the public that the fatal shootings were an isolated incident and posed no broader danger to the community.
“At this time, we have no outstanding individuals in this case,” Bourne said. “The scene is secure. There is no ongoing threat to the public.”
