Pima County Sheriff Investigates Human Remains Found Near Tucson

Human remains discovered in a desert area southwest of Tucson are not believed to be connected to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department announced on Aug. 17.

Deputies from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue team responded to reports of human remains found near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard, according to a statement from Sheriff Chris Nanos on Monday.

“The remains appear to have been at the location for an extended period of time. At this time, there is no indication they are connected to the Nancy Guthrie investigation,” Nanos said.

“Additional information will be released as it becomes available,” the sheriff said.

Officials have not released information about the person’s identity or how long the remains may have been at the site.

This is not the first discovery of human remains during the search. In May, human remains were found less than 5 miles from Guthrie’s home. It was determined that the remains were centuries old and not related to her disappearance. In that discovery, University of Arizona anthropologist James T. Watson said the found human remains could have been buried up to 1,000 years ago.

The recent discovery comes as the search continues for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie. Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her Catalina Foothills home on the evening of Jan. 31. The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department continue to investigate her disappearance.

Surveillance video released by the FBI shows an armed individual approaching Guthrie’s front door and appearing to tamper with the camera on the morning she disappeared.

Investigators are asking the public for help identifying the person. No suspect has been publicly named in Guthrie’s disappearance.

Nanos also gave an update on July 30, six months since Guthrie was last seen, saying investigators were still analyzing DNA and digital evidence and pursuing credible leads. The sheriff said the work was complex and time-consuming, and that the joint task force with the FBI remained committed to finding Guthrie and providing answers to her family.
Savannah Guthrie marked six months since her mother’s disappearance with another public appeal for information. In an Instagram post, she said her family remains in agony and urged anyone with knowledge of the case to come forward. “”I truly believe it is never too late to do the right thing,” she said.

The FBI is offering up to $100,000 for information leading to her location or to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance.

Anyone with information about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance is asked to call 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit a tip online.
