Princess Diana’s butler has broken his silence on Earl Spencer’s book with a brutal message on Piers Morgan’s show.
Paul Burrell has disputed Spencer’s claims that the King was ‘giddy with excitement’ when Princess Diana died and slammed him as ‘jealous’.
Diana’s former butler told Morgan in the exclusive interview he believed the book is “more about Earl Spencer than it is about his sister Diana.”
He added that the “rather spiteful revengeful point of view that he’s penned” is unrecognisable to him, as somebody who spent a lot of time with the Princess before she died in 1997.
Burrell explained he was there when the King arrived in Paris following Diana’s death and the Earl’s depiction of him being ‘giddy with excitement’ is far from the truth.
He said: “He speaks about the King being giddy with excitement when Diana died. Well Piers, I was in Paris, I saw the king.
“He was a broken man. He was devastated”
The former butler continued that when Charles exited the room where Diana lay to rest alongside her sisters he had clearly been crying, “his eyes were bloodshot”.
“He was pale and he was scared,” said Burrell.
He continued: “I don’t recognise what Earl Spencer says about Prince Charles.”
He also highlighted the “fractured” relationship between the siblings, and Diana and her whole family.
He said: “The last five years of her life are pretty vague in the book because he knows nothing about them.
The member of staff revealed that he could “count on one hand” the number of times Spencer visited Kensington Palace for lunch and even noted himself in a letter to Diana that he was “on the periphery” of her life.
Burrell added: “He was not part of her world.
“They [Diana’s family] were jealous of her success and the love she had from people around the world.”
