New Survival Thriller Hailed as One of the Best of the Year in First Reviews

The first official reviews for 20th Century Studios’ Whalefall were posted on Rotten Tomatoes, as the movie now boasts a 78% Tomatometer score (average positive critic rating). IndieWire‘s Alison Foreman did not think the movie was perfect, noting that the “metaphor is painfully on the nose” but admitting that the inside of a whale was “an astonishing place to spend a movie.” Simon Cook of Empire described the movie as “frightening, thrilling, bold and brutal,” dubbing it a “genuine one-off and the most surreal blockbuster in years.”

We Live Entertainment‘s Aaron Neuwirth wrote that the movie “draws strength from its emotional core and strong performances” from the cast, also praising the “amazing visuals” on screen. Critic Zach Pope had high praise for Whalefall, calling it “survival horror at its BEST” and teasing that the story becomes “a devastating and profound story about fathers, sons, and old wounds.” Daily Telegraph‘s Tim Robey bluntly described the thriller as “outlandishly gross” and “fittingly gripping,” warning viewers that it is “probably best watched on an empty stomach.”
