Netflix
crime drama Adolescence
has been on everyone’s lips in the last three weeks, and as well as scoring a phenomenal 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, the series has now found its way into the list of the top shows in the streamer’s history. According to Netflix, the show has been watched almost 97 million times, with over 370 hours viewed since its debut.
The four-part series is currently sitting at ninth place in the Netflix all-time chart, having passed Stranger Things 3, which is now in tenth place. Naturally, Adolescence‘s position is based on the volume of views and not the time viewed, as with a runtime of half that of any other entry in the Top 10, it would be an unfair comparison to try and make. However, there can be no denying how the powerful drama, co-created by star Stephen Graham, has struck a chord with viewers and is destined to be a huge awards success story in the coming year.

‘Adolescence’ Creator Shares Blunt Response to Race-Swap Complaints About the Harrowing Netflix Drama
‘Adolescence’ co-creator Jack Thorne has responded to theories that the show race-swapped a real-life crime for the show.
The mini-series tells the tragic story of the Miller family, who are thrown into turmoil after 13-year-old Jamie Miller is accused of killing a female classmate. Adolescence has seen huge success since its release, and has been a permanent fixture at the top of the Netflix streaming chart since its release. Dominating discussions on social media, garnering incredible praise for its script, casting, and direction, Adolescence is one of those shows that speaks to those living in the present. Series’ co-creator, Jack Thorne, he has big hopes that the series will also have a life beyond its streaming success. He previously said:
“I want it to be shown in schools, I want it to be shown in Parliament. It’s crucial because this is only going to get worse. It’s something that people need to be talking about, hopefully that’s what drama can do.”
‘Adolescence’ Is One of the Most Talked About Shows of the Year
Adolescence has been met with critical acclaim from all sides, holding a 99% critics score and 71% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While many Netflix shows and movies that have topped the streaming charts have also landed less than exceptional review scores, Adolescence is an exception to the rule. MovieWeb’s own Rachel Johnson heaped praise on the series, saying…
“Adolescence will take viewers on a chilling, dread-inducing journey as Jamie’s deeply buried pain, fragility, and troubling personal feelings and attitudes are examined in the fallout of the heinous crime and somber investigation.”
Created by Thorne and Graham, and directed by Philip Barantini, Adolescence stars Graham as Eddie Miller, the father of Owen Cooper’s Jamie, the teenager accused of murder. The rest of the cast includes Ashley Walters (Top Boy), Erin Doherty (The Crown), Faye Marsay (Game of Thrones), Christine Tremarco (The Responder), Mark Stanley (Happy Valley), Jo Hartley (After Life), and Amélie Pease.
While many of the cast have already established themselves as incredible actors, especially the multi-talented Graham, Owen Cooper has been hailed as a new Tom Holland after his heart-wrenching and incredible performance as the young boy at the center of a murder investigation. Only time will tell if his career does become as successful as the current Spider-Man star, but it would be a foolish person that would bet against it.
