Brand New Day’ Upgrades Peter Parker With Organic Web-Shooters

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is pulling influence from one of the most iconic and controversial elements of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy is often regarded as one of the greatest superhero sagas ever made, with the divisive Spider-Man 3 even getting reappraisal in the years following its release. Now widely beloved, one controversial element among fans before the films and at the time of the movie’s release was Peter Parker’s organic web-shooters.

While getting rid of the mechanical web-shooters downplayed some of Peter Parker’s engineering intelligence, the organic web-shooters helped make Tobey Maguire’s version of Spider-Man unique, so much so that his unique web ability becomes a point of conversation among his variants in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Losing the organic webbing, or “web block,” also became a key thematic element in Spider-Man 2, one of the best superhero movies ever made. Now, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will undergo a transformation in Spider-Man: Brand New Day that could give him organic web shooters, but also give the MCU the chance to put a new spin on the story in Spider-Man 2.

While the idea of Spider-Man’s organic webbing is most commonly associated with Sam Raimi’s 2002 film Spider-Man, the concept did not originate with that film. Filmmaker James Cameron’s 1994 draft of a Spider-Man film introduced the concept of Peter Parker having organic webbing rather than organic web-shooters. While Raimi’s version of Spider-Man was drastically different from Cameron’s pitch, the one element he did keep was the organic web-shooters, with the idea that the radioactive spider-bite would give Peter Parker the ability to shoot webs, the same way it would give him spider-sense and the ability to crawl on walls.

When Sony Pictures decided to reboot the Spider-Man films with The Amazing Spider-Man, the two big sells would be that it would bring Peter Parker back to high school, and Peter Parker would have mechanical web-shooters. Andrew Garfield’s mechanical web-shooters are a vital part in both The Amazing Spider-Man films, as part of his suiting up montage in the first film is about him building tech, while The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sees Peter Parker and Gwen Stacey come up with a technique to protect the web-shooters from being fried by Electro’s electricity.

The MCU’s Spider-Man, like Garfield’s, used mechanical web-shooters. Though both he and Garfield’s version of Spider-Man were fascinated by Tobey Maguire’s version, being able to produce webs organically. Spider-Man: Brand New Day seems to show Holland’s Peter Parker spider-powers evolving, with one of them being the inclusion of organic webbing. He at least has a frame of reference after encountering his multiversal doppelgänger in Spider-Man: No Way Home. What is fascinating is that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is not only drawing inspiration from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, but a specific comic from the mid-2000s designed to bring the Marvel Comics Spider-Man in line with Tobey Maguire’s cinematic counterpart.

‘Brand New Day’ Draws From a Comic Inspired By the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man Movies

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is pulling from a wide array of Spider-Man comics. The title itself is a direct reference to Brand New Day, a 2008 storyline that ran from The Amazing Spider-Man #546 to 564. The trailer shows recreations of The Amazing Fantasy #15 and The Amazing Spider-Man #134. The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day also reveals that the movie will draw heavily on “The Other” storyline, an event from 2005 and 2006 that ran across multiple Spider-Man titles. That storyline famously featured Peter Parker emerging from a web cocoon with the ability to produce organic webbing, a beat replicated in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer.

The “Other” storyline comic was partially made to bring the Spider-Man comics more in alignment with the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man feature films, being published between 2004’s Spider-Man 2 and 2007’s Spider-Man 3. It was one of many times when Marvel Comics changed its characters to synchronize with the feature film. Now, a Spider-Man film is being inspired by a Spider-Man comic that itself drew inspiration from a previous Spider-Man film.

How Organic Webbing Plays Into ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day shows that Peter Parker’s spider-powers are undergoing some type of metamorphosis. The exact cause is unknown, but it seems like a safe bet that it is linked to Peter Parker discovering that MJ (Zendaya) is in a new relationship. This is similar to Spider-Man 2, where Peter Parker’s web blockage first happened when he saw Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) with a new man, later revealed to be John Jameson. In Spider-Man 2, Peter’s feelings for Mary Jane caused a mental block on his powers, prompting him to abandon the Spider-Man persona for a bit.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day looks to flip that scenario. Instead of Peter’s powers dissipating after MJ found new love, in the MCU, it will lead to Spider-Man’s powers being enhanced. It appears this includes developing organic webbing, as seen when Peter Parker wakes up in a web cocoon, but potentially becoming more spider-like. While Spider-Man 2 saw Peter Parker regain his powers and will to be Spider-Man, this raises some questions about how Spider-Man: Brand New Day will approach this crisis. Will the organic web-shooters be a permanent addition to his powers for the MCU moving forward, or a one-film boost of powers that he stops in an effort to not mutate further?

Bruce Banner notes his powers are “mutating”, a specific choice of word for Marvel as it can’t help but call to mind mutants and, of course, the X-Men. Even though Spider-Man himself is not a mutant, he is classified as a mutant. Unlike mutants, who are born with a mutant X gene, mutates are individuals whose genetic structure is altered after birth by external factors such as cosmic rays, gamma rays, or radioactive spiders. Yet it makes a certain amount of sense to introduce a member of the X-Men in a Spider-Man movie all about genes mutating, lending further weight to the rumor that Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s decision to give Peter Parker organic web-shooters is more than a callback to Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. It is a creative decision that looks to evolve the character of Spider-Man’s power and stories. It also creates a foundational connection to the X-Men that is as organic as Peter Parker’s new web-shooters.
