British and Irish Lions star carted off in neck brace after sickening tackle

The British and Irish Lions have been dealt yet another injury blow ahead of the start of their Test series against Australia.

Luke Cowan-Dickie left the field on a stretcher and in a neck brace in the first-half of Saturday’s clash against AUNZ XV.

The England international appeared to be knocked unconscious after falling foul of his own attempted tackle.

The Sale Sharks hooker stooped too low and inadvertently smacked the side of his head against the ball-carrier’s knee.

It could mean his tour is over, with the Lions now set to play the Wallabies three times in the space of the next three weeks.

And that would be the latest injury headache for head coach Andy Farrell, who has already lost a number of players during these warm-up fixtures.

Former England and Lions star Ben Kay was on commentary duty for talkSPORT when the Cowan-Dickie incident happened.

He reacted: “Unfortunately Luke Cowan-Dickie’s tackling style can sometimes lead him to this sort of issue.

“We’ve seen it before with him having concussions. I’m just wondering whether it is. Yeah, it’s a right knee to the temple.

“He tackles so low and he often gets criticised because it is relatively dangerous, but the way the laws have gone the coaches love this because he chopped tackles literally at shin height.

“Sometimes he struggles to really wrap his arm right round, but he always gets it up in an attempt to wrap it round. You need really good shoulder flexibility to be able to do that.”
