One of the best crime thrillers of the year is due to land on
Netflix later this month. Directed by the Academy Award-nominated filmmaker behind Black Swan and The Whale, Darren Aronofsky, this year’s Caught Stealing was met with critical acclaim upon release back in August, and is now due to land on the popular streaming platform very soon.
Starring Academy Award-nominee and sought-after leading man, Austin Butler, Caught Stealing tells the story of a washed-up baseball player who suddenly finds himself the target of ruthless New York City gangsters. Based on the novel of the same name by Charlie Huston, who himself adapted the book for Aronofsky’s adaptation, the crime thriller features an all-star cast alongside Butler that includes Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Benito Martínez Ocasio, Griffin Dunne, and Carol Kane.
Coming courtesy of What’s on Netflix, it has now been confirmed that Caught Stealing will be available to stream on Netflix in the United States on November 29, 2025, as part of Sony Pictures’ ongoing deal with the streamer. While waiting, you can check out the official synopsis for Caught Stealing below…
Hank Thompson (Austin Butler) was a high-school baseball phenom who can’t play anymore, but everything else is going okay. He’s got a great girl (Zoë Kravitz), tends bar at a New York dive, and his favorite team is making an underdog run at the pennant. When his punk-rock neighbor Russ (Matt Smith) asks him to take care of his cat for a few days, Hank suddenly finds himself caught in the middle of a motley crew of threatening gangsters. They all want a piece of him; the problem is he has no idea why. As Hank attempts to evade their ever-tightening grip, he’s got to use all his hustle to stay alive long enough to find out….
‘Caught Stealing’ Knocked It Out the Park With Critics… But Struck Out at the Box Office
Caught Stealing was met with critical acclaim and now holds an impressive score of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. The crime thriller outing was also one of the rare occasions in which critics and audiences are in agreement, with Caught Stealing boasting a score of 83% on the Popcornmeter. Critics praised the movie for its “freewheeling throwback” sensibilities, as well as splendidly showcasing “Austin Butler’s movie star charisma.” Audiences, meanwhile, hailed Caught Stealing as a “gritty, violent ride fueled by the charisma of Austin Butler and Zoë Kravitz.”
While MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman criticized some “significant plot holes” and “completely implausible reactions” to some of the more violent scenarios, he did praise the “bloody and entertaining twists” and the direction of Darren Aronofsky.
“That said, Aronofsky does succeed in capturing a unique time period and setting before America’s greatest skyline was forever changed.”
Sadly, despite the hugely positive response from both critics and audiences alike, Caught Stealing flopped at the box office after grossing $32 million worldwide against a reported $40 million budget. Here’s hoping the crime thriller will follow in the footsteps of several flops before it and find the success it deserves once it makes its streaming debut.
