For the first time in three years, Doncaster Sheffield Airport will welcome visitors back for a special event. After a long hiatus, this historic airport, which closed its doors in 2022, will reopen briefly to the public for a one-day event on March 21, 2026. The event, titled “Run the Runway,” will allow the public to run on the once-bustling airport runway, a rare opportunity for aviation enthusiasts and local residents alike.
The Run the Runway event, organised by Libra Races, will feature two race distances: a 3.5 km race for participants aged seven and above, and a 5.8 km race for those aged 12 and older. This unique event allows individuals to experience the space in a completely new way, walking or running along the very same runway that once served commercial flights to destinations across Europe.
The event has already captured attention, with over 300 tickets sold within the first day of release. Each race participant will receive a bespoke medal and the chance to take photographs with a Vulcan Bomber, which will be displayed on the tarmac during the event.
Rebirth Plans: Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s Return to the Skies
The Run the Runway event is not just a nostalgic return to the past but also part of the broader efforts to revive Doncaster Sheffield Airport as a fully functional hub. The airport, once home to airlines like TUI and Wizz Air, ceased commercial operations in 2022 after its operator, Peel Group, reported substantial financial losses. However, plans are now in motion to relaunch the airport, with a £193 million (USD 260 million) investment aimed at revitalising the airport infrastructure.
City of Doncaster Council and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) are spearheading the effort to revive the airport, with discussions already underway with major airlines such as Ryanair and TUI. The goal is to relaunch passenger flights by 2027, although the first flights are expected to be limited to cargo services, with commercial routes potentially following in 2028.
The reopening will breathe new life into the region, offering significant economic benefits. Early estimates suggest that the reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport could contribute up to £5 billion (USD 6.7 billion) to the local economy. This project is part of the broader South Yorkshire Airport City initiative, which seeks to turn the surrounding area into a hub for both aviation and business development.
Impact on Local Tourism and Travel Connectivity
For the South Yorkshire region, the reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport represents a critical move to restore regional travel connectivity. Once fully operational, the airport will offer direct access to several key destinations across Europe, enhancing tourism and business opportunities for local residents.
The revival of commercial flights is expected to create more opportunities for international and domestic travel, providing easier access for visitors from across the UK and beyond. As Doncaster continues to grow as a regional tourism hub, the reopening of the airport could attract more travellers, particularly those looking for a more convenient departure point in South Yorkshire.
In addition to the Run the Runway event, the airport will continue to engage the community and draw attention to the redevelopment efforts, helping to build excitement ahead of the airport’s full reopening. The public’s involvement in such events highlights a growing sense of pride and anticipation as the airport takes steps toward its relaunch.
A New Beginning for Doncaster Sheffield Airport and South Yorkshire
The reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport is more than just a technical endeavour, it’s an exciting milestone in the revival of a once-bustling regional hub. With the Run the Runway event offering a taste of what’s to come, the airport’s return to service promises to enhance regional connectivity, boost tourism, and stimulate the local economy.
The event and the planned reopening will not only allow local residents to reconnect with their past but also pave the way for future travellers to enjoy a seamless journey to and from South Yorkshire. The combination of cargo flights in the early stages and commercial passenger services to follow will ensure that the airport contributes significantly to the region’s growth and its appeal as a travel destination.
Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s return to the skies is a promising development for the UK’s aviation sector, as the revival project unfolds, offering new opportunities for both business and leisure travel in the years ahead.
