The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has warned people getting a call about an automatic discount on bills to ignore it. In a post on X, the government department explained: “Have you heard about the Warm Home Discount Scheme? If you’re eligible, the £150 credit will be automatically applied to your electricity account. If you get a call asking you to apply for the discount, it’s a scam.”
The official gov.uk website notes that the money is not paid directly to you. Instead, “your electricity supplier will apply the discount to your bill”, if you are eligible. It adds: “You’ll usually get the discount automatically if you’re eligible. You only need to apply if you’re on a low income in Scotland – contact your energy supplier to apply.”
If you would rather get the discount on your gas bill, assuming your supplier provides you with gas and electricity, you can contact your supplier to find out if this is something they can do. Don’t worry if you claim this support as the “the discount will not affect your Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment”, the government confirms.
Eligibility
There are different ways to qualify for the Warm Home Discount Scheme depending on where you live. If you live in England and Wales, you qualify if you either:
If you live in Scotland, you qualify if you either:
The Warm Home Discount scheme is not available in Northern Ireland. Find out about the Affordable Warmth scheme.
Can I get the discount if I have a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go meter?
Yes, don’t worry. You can still qualify for the discount. The department states: “Your electricity supplier can tell you how you’ll get the discount if you’re eligible, for example, a voucher you can use to top up your meter.”
Can I get a discount if I live in a mobile home?
You can get a discount if you live in a park (mobile) home. You apply a different way if you live in a park home and can apply for the Park Homes Warm Home Discount here.
Didn’t get a letter about the discount?
The department asks people to contact the Warm Home Discount Scheme if they do not get a letter by early January 2026 and they think they are eligible. The DWP warns: “You must contact them before February 28 2026.” If you live in Scotland and have the discount applied directly to your energy supplier, you will not get a letter from the Warm Home Discount Scheme. Contact your energy supplier instead, it suggests.
