Disney has officially unveiled the first Lilo & Stitch teaser online, and it’s exactly what fans had hoped it would be. Starring Chris Sanders reprising his voice role as Stitch, and franchise newcomer Maia Kealoha as Lilo, the upcoming remake is set to reimagine the beloved animated classic for modern audiences. The first footage unveils everyone’s favorite blue creature at the beach, leaning into his “destructive tendencies” in a loose homage to the original Lilo & Stitch.
The Lilo & Stitch teaser released online ahead of Moana 2 heading to theaters later this week. The 30-second trailer includes Stitch acting out his best Godzilla impression and destroying a line of detailed sandcastles on the beach. Although the footage is missing one-half of the movie’s title, it gives fans the best look at the visual style and overall vibe of the film. It’s hard not to love how Stitch looks in “live-action,” even though he is just more of a high-res version of the animated version with detailed fur. Any realistic rendition of the creature probably would have felt like repeating the same mistake Sonic the Hedgehog made before completely redesigning the titular character, in all fairness.
Fans were treated to a first-look image of Stitch in the live-action remake earlier this year, but the latest teaser gives them the best look at the lovable blue creature yet. Despite the live-action format, it seems Lilo & Stitch retains the playfulness of the original film while taking advantage of the new medium. Unlike Dreamworks’ upcoming How to Train Your Dragon, or Disney’s “live-action” version of The Lion King, it seems Lilo & Stitch won’t be a one-for-one remake. Although the film will surely borrow elements and homage specific sequences, perhaps Lilo & Stitch will be breaking the live-action animation mold by delivering something fresh and exciting.
