Physical media enthusiasts who have been jousting to get their hands on a 4K release of A Knight’s Tale have reason to celebrate because Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just announced a new collectible steelbook that includes fully restored versions of both the Extended and Theatrical cuts of the rock-and-roll comedy, which stars Heath Ledger as the charming William Thatcher (or as he may prefer to be known, Sir Ulrich von Liechtenstein of Gelderland).
As reported by ComicBook.com, the 4K Blu-ray of A Knight’s Tale will be released on May 20, 2025, with plenty of extras for movie fans to explore. The discs are not only loaded with both versions of the movie presented in 4K with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio (approved by director Brian Helgeland), but there is also a slew of bonus features, including deleted scenes, extended scenes, cast and crew commentaries, behind-the-scenes featurettes, a gag reel, and more — detailed below.

The steelbook (pictured directly below) is sure to be a standout on any shelf as it features an image of Ledger’s lead character on the front, poised and ready for a steel-on-steel skirmish, wearing medieval armor with his sword in hand. He is joined by several other cast members on the reverse, including Thatcher’s love interest in the movie Jocelyn, played by Shannyn Sossamon. The inside of the case is where the action is, as the image depicts one of the movie’s beloved jousting tournaments.
‘A Knight’s Tale’ Is a Real Rags-to-Riches Story
It’s nearly 25 years since A Knight’s Tale was released in theaters, but many deem it to be a perfect movie despite its mixed critical reception back then. It blends action, romance, and comedy to deliver a heartwarming story that centers around a peasant squire named William Thatcher, who masquerades as a knight and takes the jousting world by storm (as well as cinema-going audiences since the movie grossed $117.5 million at the worldwide box office against a production budget of $65 million).
A Knight’s Tale has grown in popularity over the years, particularly as it found its way to streaming. It has been available to rent, purchase or stream on several platforms and most recently joined the Paramount+ library. As a result of its seemingly wide appeal, director Brian Helgeland pitched a sequel to the classic comedy to Netflix in April last year. However, Netflix decided not to move forward with the project after testing the sequel concept through its algorithm and determining that it would not be successful enough to justify the production, leaving audiences with only one chapter in the chivalrous knight’s tale to watch.
The 4K Blu-ray Steelbook of A Knight’s Tale will be released on May 20, 2025.
