Heineken® Embarks on Bold Global Search for Successor to Safeguard McLoughlin’s Bar Legacy

Global beer giant Heineken® has launched a groundbreaking worldwide recruitment campaign to help Josie McLoughlin, the independent owner of McLoughlin’s Bar, find a successor to carry on the legacy.

Located on the remote Achill Island, McLoughlin’s Bar is nestled in the rugged beauty of West Ireland. A fourth-generation McLoughlin, Josie was born above the bar, and after the passing of his parents, he has spent 43 years behind the counter.

However, with his family now spread across the globe and no one to inherit the business, Josie, now at retirement age, is on a mission to find someone with the same dedication to take over the family-run establishment and preserve the McLoughlin name for future generations.

Josie, whose family has run McLoughlin’s for 155 years, explains, “I have no one to leave the pub to, and I’d resigned myself to looking for a buyer outside the family and seeing my name being lost to history. That would just break my heart. The name McLoughlin is woven into the very fabric of this pub. The past 50 years have been incredibly fulfilling for me and I’d love to see that story continue, finding a McLoughlin descendant to take it forward. If I could guarantee the McLoughlin name would still be above the door of the pub in another 155 years, I’d die a happy man.”

Heineken® has teamed up with Josie and his partner Jackie to launch a global search for a new steward who will uphold the McLoughlin tradition and keep the soul of the pub alive. This person will take on the role of guardian, preserving a legacy of stories, pints, and, of course, the iconic Irish craic.

Harnessing its worldwide reach, Heineken® has rolled out a recruitment campaign with massive billboards and striking ads in cities across the globe where Irish emigrants have settled, including New York, Boston, Sydney, Auckland, Buenos Aires, and Phan Thiết (Vietnam). A robust digital and PR push will ensure no stone is left unturned in the quest for the perfect successor to the McLoughlin legacy.

In addition, Heineken® is offering a comprehensive succession package for the chosen successor, which includes mentorship, business support, and initial investment guidance to ensure McLoughlin’s Bar continues to be a vital part of the community.

For years, Heineken® has championed the pub as the cornerstone of social life, and nowhere is this more true than in Ireland. Whether a bustling city pub or a beloved local where community members gather for celebrations, these pubs are the beating heart of Irish society—a spirit Heineken® is determined to protect.

Pubs like McLoughlin’s, O’Donoghue’s, and Fitzpatrick’s have been more than just places to drink; they’ve been hubs for meeting, storytelling, and preserving culture for generations. Today, these institutions face the challenge of succession, as many publicans, like Josie, have no one to pass their lifelong legacy on to.

Through this campaign, Heineken® aims to ensure that pubs remain central to social life in Ireland and beyond. This initiative is part of a broader ‘For the Love of Pubs’ campaign, which includes various programs dedicated to supporting and celebrating the pub industry.

Mark Noble, Marketing Manager at Heineken® Ireland says, “When we heard Josie’s story, we just knew we had to do something to help. Pubs in Ireland are more than just places to enjoy a drink; they are living pieces of history, places of laughter, song, and kinship. With many of these institutions facing uncertain futures, we want to rally the Irish diaspora, inspiring a new generation of pub owners to take on not just a business, but a cultural legacy. For those who have longed to reconnect with their Irish heritage, this is more than an investment; it’s a homecoming: the chance to own a piece of Ireland, to pour a pint for old friends and new, and to keep the spirit of the pub alive for generations to come.”

With 88 million people of Irish descent worldwide, it only takes one person to step forward and reconnect with their roots by taking the reins of a pub that carries their family name.

So, could you be the next McLoughlin?

Picture walking into a pub where your family name is proudly displayed above the door—a place where past generations have gathered and where future ones will continue to do the same. Located at the edge of Ireland’s stunning emerald isle, where the Atlantic waves crash, the fire crackles, and stories flow as freely as the pints, such a place exists.

Founded in 1870, McLoughlin’s Bar is nestled in the heart of Achill Sound. Visitors can expect a warm welcome, a beautiful beer garden to enjoy in the summer, a cozy fire in the winter, and live traditional music late into the night.

From the pub’s doorstep, breathtaking views stretch across the sea and up to the towering Slievemore mountain, providing the perfect backdrop for stunning sunsets.

Beyond its natural beauty—Achill Island, the setting for the Golden Globe and BAFTA-winning film The Banshees of Inisherin—offers a tight-knit community and a deep sense of social connection.

If you’re a McLoughlin and passionate about keeping the family legacy alive, there’s a pub in Ireland with your name on it.
