The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on Sept. 2 made public over 33,000 pages of records related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
This follows a subpoena from House Oversight Chairman James Comer requiring the Justice Department (DOJ) to turn over records on Epstein, who died in a New York jail in 2019, and on his former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year sentence for aiding the disgraced financier.
Comer also issued deposition subpoenas to some former officials demanding their testimony.
Among the files included were video clips appearing to be body cam footage from police searches, as well as recordings and summaries of law enforcement interviews with victims detailing the abuse they said they suffered.
The 33,295 pages of records largely consisted of information that had already been made public by the DOJ, according to Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee, who claimed that only about 3 percent of the released files contained new information.
“After careful review, Oversight Democrats have found that 97 percent of the documents received from the Department of Justice were already public,” Garcia stated. “There is no mention of any client list or anything that improves transparency or justice for victims.”
He said that the files include surveillance footage from the Metropolitan Correctional Center on the night of Epstein’s death, communications between the Bureau of Prisons and the DOJ about his death, and court filings from his criminal case in Florida, which have previously been released.
“Pam Bondi has said the client list was on her desk. She could release it right now if she wanted to,” Garcia added.
If Massie, who is pressing for the bill alongside Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), is able to force a vote, the legislation would still need to pass the Senate and be signed into law by President Donald Trump.
The Epoch Times has reached out to the DOJ for comment, but did not receive a response by publication time.
