James Gunn Reveals How Many Sequels Will Be In the ‘Superman’ Saga

DCU boss James Gunn has revealed his plans for the future of Superman…and they are epic. The former MCU filmmaker has now officially launched his recalibrated DC cinematic universe, with Superman introducing a colorful comic book world the likes of which we haven’t seen on the big screen for some time. Clearly, everyone at Warner Bros. is pleased with both the critical and financial results, as Gunn has big plans for the Man of Steel going forward.

During an appearance on The Viall Files w/ Nick Viall, James Gunn reflected on the future of several DCU characters, including Superman and Peacemaker, before revealing that the so-called “Superman Saga” will consist of not just a trilogy, but four movies in total.

“I am like thinking ‘what is the long-term story I’m telling here? What is the story that I’m gonna tell about Superman over four movies?'”

While Superman has been met with largely positive reviews, one of the main criticisms leveled at the reboot took aim at the movie having so much ground to cover with its multiple new character introductions alongside the Man of Steel himself. Knowing that Superman’s arc will take place over four movies is certainly an exciting prospect for any fan, and should give Gunn more than enough time and space to give the beloved superhero icon the epic saga he deserves.

‘Superman 2’ Is Coming Sooner Than We Thought…

But when might we expect Superman 2 to fly into theaters? Well, we might not be waiting very long at all, as James Gunn recently revealed that he has already written the treatment for the follow-up, which will seemingly take a different approach than simply being a straight-up sequel, with plans to start production sooner rather than later.

“I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the ‘Superman Saga.’ The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked out treatment. I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”

Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman stars David Corenswet (Twisters, Hollywood) in the iconic role of Superman/Clark Kent alongside Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, Nosferatu) as Lex Luthor. Superman has proven to be the big opening hit the newly emerging DCU needed, achieving a positive response from both critics and audiences alike, as well as grossing $597 million at the worldwide box office. Superman is now available to buy and rent on Digital, and you can check out the official synopsis below.

“When Superman gets drawn into conflicts at home and abroad, his actions are questioned, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor the opportunity to get the Man of Steel out of the way for good. Will intrepid reporter Lois Lane and Superman’s four-legged companion, Krypto, be able to help him before it’s too late?”
