Supergirl is the next big feature film from Warner Bros. and DC Studios after the release of Superman, with Milly Alcock playing the titular hero. DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have wasted no time in introducing the surviving members of the House of El to the DCU. While there aren’t any confirmed plans for the superhero relatives to crossover in the future, it feels inevitable. Superman will have to contend with Lex Luthor in his upcoming film, while Supergirl will have a very different and more physical threat in the form of Lobo, played by Jason Momoa. Recently, Gunn spoke about how big of a role Lobo would play in the upcoming movie.
While making a guest appearance on the DC Studios Showcase Podcast, Gunn would discuss Supergirl and how the production recently wrapped filming. As the conversation shifted to Lobo, Gunn offered an interesting tidbit of information about the character’s inclusion. Supergirl is based heavily on the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which sees the hero going on a cosmic adventure with a young girl. Lobo isn’t featured in the book, but was instead added by screenwriter Ana Nogueira (with some input from Gunn) for one particular reason.

Jason Momoa’s Latest Lobo Update Is Exactly What Fans Needed
Jason Momoa is arguably more excited than fans for the world to see his Lobo costume.
As Gunn told the Podcast, the Woman of Tomorrow comic that the film is based on “is very much a bunch of little stories. We needed to create one throughline, one three-act story, so Lobo helps us to do that.” So, Lobo will be an overarching character that helps connect the various vignettes and locales that Supergirl will have, while also more than likely posing an intimidating threat. It’s an exciting and creative choice that will allow for a new take on the comic book story while also expanding the DC Universe.
‘Supergirl’ Will Feature an Array of Interesting Characters
Interestingly, Jason Momoa is a rare exception, as he is the only mainline Justice League actor returning from the now-defunct DCEU. Only this time around, Momoa isn’t playing the superhero Aquaman, but instead the crazed cosmic character Lobo. In the comics, Lobo is an alien mercenary and bounty hunter whose strength and durability rival that of Superman (and, in the film’s case, Supergirl).
Momoa has often cited, even in his tenure as Aquaman, his aspirations to play Lobo, which James Gunn has now provided him the opportunity to do in the DCU. However, Lobo won’t be the only opposing force in Supergirl, with Matthias Schoenaerts playing Krem of the Yellow Hills, a space pirate who serves as the main antagonist of the comic that the movie is based on. What remains to be seen is how Lobo affects Krem’s involvement in the overarching story.
The events of the comic unfold because Ruthye Marye Knoll (who will be played by Eve Ridley in the film) seeks a bounty hunter to kill Krem, since he had killed her father. She finds Supergirl instead, though the film could deviate and have Lobo be a part of the story in a new take on the conflict that will add more of a physical threat for Supergirl to deal with. Whatever the case is, it will be interesting to see how the Craig Gillespie-directed feature turns out as the next big film in the DCU.
