The political row erupted after France shut down any chances of renegotiation regarding the NI protocol and reportedly said that Northern Ireland was not part of the UK.

The comment sparked political fury with then Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab saying the remark was “offensive”.

Mr Johnson said after the bilateral talks: “Of course, we make the point continuously we are part of one great, indivisible United Kingdom.”

But Macron retaliated and claimed that he “never took the liberty to question the sovereignty, the territorial integrity of the United Kingdom”.
