Meghan Markle once had an “uncomfortable” phone call with Palace staff which suggested she should not wear a piece of treasured jewellery.
The Duchess of Sussex once received a gift from Prince Harry that caused panic at Buckingham Palace as the pair were trying to avoid salacious headlines.
In the early days of their relationship the Duke of Sussex treated his new girlfriend Meghan to a personalised piece of jewellery and splashed out on a 14-carat gold chain by Maya Brenne that featured ‘M’ and ‘H’ charms. The necklace was estimated to cost £235 ($300).
Understandably Meghan was keen to wear the piece – but Palace officials felt it could spark unnecessary headlines. Authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand wrote about the fallout in their unofficial biography of Meghan and Harry, Finding Freedom.
They claimed that a royal aide told Meghan on a phone call not to wear the necklace because it would attract unwanted attention from the press.
They wrote: “She was advised that wearing such a necklace only served to encourage the photographers to keep pursuing such images – and new headlines.”
Meghan supposedly told friends that the call made her “emotional” and she “said very little” during the call.
The book said: “After hanging up, she felt frustrated and emotional. While she knew the aide had good intentions, the surreal experience of having someone from her boyfriend’s office tell her what kind of jewellery to wear or not to smile at a photographer was too much.”
The now Duchess of Sussex felt “damned if she did, and damned if she didn’t.”
She reportedly told a friend: “I can’t win. They make out like I’m to blame for these pictures, that it looks like I’m to blame for these pictures, that it looks like I’m encouraging them, that me even acknowledging the cameras may not be sending the right message.”
Meanwhile, it seems as though Meghan is said to want to “share her truth” about being a member of the Royal Family in a new book of her own – but one thing is causing her to “hold off” on releasing it anytime soon.
Insiders suggest the Duchess of Sussex is waiting for the perfect moment to release a revealing memoir that could bring in millions.
While another tell-all book might spell trouble for the Royal Family, it appears to be an inevitable hurdle they’ll need to confront “sooner rather than later,” according to sources speaking to Closer Online.
Prince Harry’s Spare, which was released in January 2023, is said to have earned him £20 million, including a hefty advance of around £14 million.
