The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced the recall of cage-free brown eggs that were distributed regionally in the state.
The recall applies to Grade AA Large Eggs distributed at restaurants and farmers’ markets in Davis and Sacramento, California.
Vega Farms company leaders did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication.
This isn’t the first egg recall this year.
In September, the Black Sheep Egg Company of Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, voluntarily recalled its 12- and 18-count cartons of Free Range Large Grade A Brown Eggs due to their potential for Salmonella contamination.
“Salmonella contamination of foods tends to reveal a huge breach in hygiene, though it could also indicate that water sources were improperly tested prior to distribution,” Agruss Law Firm consumer attorney and litigation partner Mike Bertucci told NTD.
Symptoms of salmonellosis include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Children younger than five, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have more severe infections.
“Some of these strains are known to cause human illness,” the federal agency said. “The FDA does not have information available at this time to suggest that this firm is the source of an ongoing outbreak.”
