Prom Queen’ Reveals First Look and Netflix Release Window

Look alive, Shadysiders, Netflix has just revealed the first images from Fear Street: Prom Queen, and it appears as if we’re in for a bloody good time. The latest installment in the popular horror franchise that kicked off in 2021 is set to return later this year, and this time around, will focus on the students of Shadyside High as they prepare to crown the 1988 prom queen. However, when an unusual nominee emerges in the race, some of the other candidates begin to vanish without a trace.

Based on the novel by R.L. Stine, Fear Street: Prom Queen will be the fourth installment in the franchise, and the new images (seen below) show what appears to be the mysterious killer dressed in a red rain slicker and black gloves, tormenting the “It Girls” of Shadyside High. We also see a yearbook displaying pictures of all the candidates, two girls trying to escape through a basement window, two people running down the hallowed halls of the famed high school, and two prom queen hopefuls squaring off with one another.

The film follows in the footsteps of the previous movies that were released over the course of three weeks in the summer of 2021, but unlike what came before, this one will be a standalone movie and not part of a series. Starring India Fowler (The Nevers), Suzanna Son (Red Rocket), Fina Strazza (Paper Girls), and David Lacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty), to name a few, Fear Street: Prom Queen promises to capture the spirit of the 1980s, while at the same time showing the horrors of high school, which, honestly, haven’t changed much since then.

In this next installment of the blood-soaked Fear Street franchise, prom season at Shadyside High is underway and the school’s wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. But when a gutsy outsider is unexpectedly nominated to the court, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of ’88 is suddenly in for one hell of a prom night.”

There’s More ‘Fear Street’ Movies on the Way

While Fear Street: Prom Queen might not be a part of any sort of trilogy, that’s not to say we’ve heard the last from the residents of Shadyside. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month to promote the second season of Goosebumps on Disney+, Stine revealed that there are at least three more Fear Street movies in development. “The writers are working, so I’ve got my fingers crossed,” he said at the time.

At this point, it’s unclear if those films will be standalone movies like Prom Queen, or if they’ll be part of a larger story arc. Either way, that’s good news for fans who fell in love with the horror franchise following the release of the earlier trilogy, which was universally praised for bringing something new to the slasher genre, and for leaning into its R rating in terms of gore. Thankfully, this new installment seems to be taking the same route, as it’s received the same rating from the MPA, meaning there’s more bloody mayhem to come later this year when Fear Street: Prom Queen makes its debut on Netflix.
