After the conclusion of his acclaimed FX series Atlanta, TV fans waited with bated breath to see what Donald Glover would do next. So it was something of a surprise that his next role as star and co-creator would be an adaptation of the 2005 Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie vehicle Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Co-created with fellow Atlanta writer Francesca Sloane, the series premiered on Prime Video in February 2024 and was well-received, if not quite as rapturously as Atlanta.
Starring Glover and Maya Erskine as a pair of spies masquerading as a married couple, the series did very well on Prime, becoming one of the streamer’s top five most-viewed premieres. Amazon quickly ordered a second season, which is still in the works. So will Glover and Erskine be returning to tear it up once again? Here’s everything we know about Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2.
Who’s Involved in Season 2?
Based on what’s been reported so far, it seems that behind-the-scenes duties will remain largely the same, with Sloane acting as showrunner and Glover as executive producer. However, in front of the camera is a different situation. Entirely new actors have been cast as the central couple, and it’s unclear if Glover or Erskine will return in any form. The first season ended on a cliffhanger that left the fate of the original Smiths up in the air, though everyone involved has been very careful not to give anything away one way or another.

If Mr. & Mrs. Smith Continues, This Character Shouldn’t Be Left Behind
In a show without many secondary characters, one in particular deserves to stick around if there’s a Season 2 of Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
The new couple will be played by Mark Eydelshteyn, best known for playing the petulant son of a Russian oligarch in the Oscar-dominating Anora, and Sophie Thatcher, the Yellowjackets alum who’s emerged as one of the most in-demand genre actors in the business, starring in acclaimed films like Heretic and Companion. This casting shake-up seems to imply that Mr. & Mrs. Smith might be taking a more anthology-based approach going forward, with each season introducing a new pair of Smiths. Time will tell if this is true, or if the recasting was a compromise due to Glover and Erskine’s busy schedules.
Where Is Season 2 Being Shot?
While Season 1 was mostly shot in New York City as well as locations in Italy, Deadline reported that Season 2 is moving production to Los Angeles. The series was able to take advantage of California’s new tax incentives for film productions, an initiative aimed at bringing more productions back to the state after years of loss to cheaper markets. Particularly in the wake of the devastating LA wildfires, there’s been a renewed interest in rebuilding the area’s homegrown film industry, which has seen a large decline in recent years as more productions have moved overseas to take advantage of a cheaper labor force and other financial incentives.
The film industry took off in California in no small part because the state’s geography can substitute for any number of locations, so it’s possible the series will still engage in some globe-trotting without even having to leave the country.
When Will Season 2 Be Released?
There’s been no official release date announced yet, but it seems like it might still be a ways off. In May of this year, the series’ music composer, David Fleming, spoke to ScreenRant in a red carpet interview, sharing that the show hadn’t started filming yet as of that date, but that scripts had been written. This likely puts the second season sometime in 2026, based on the typical length of TV production.

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine Break Down the Mr. & Mrs. Smith Finale
Donald Glover and Maya Erskine’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith speak about their chaotic finale.
It’s become more common in recent years for series to take longer breaks between seasons, sometimes due to external factors like the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, or the creators’ and stars’ other projects, so a two-year gap between seasons isn’t all that unusual in this day and age. Compared to the very long, strike-enhanced waits for new seasons of shows like Severance and Yellowjackets, two years is basically no time at all.
What Will Season 2 Be About?
Unfortunately, there’s been no official word as to the plot of season two, and the creators seem to be keeping the details close to the chest. Sloane did say that she and Glover do have a plan for Season 2, even if they’re not sharing it just yet. Both want to top season one as much as possible, so time will tell if they’re able to pull it off.
Whatever Season 2 ends up being about, and whether Glover and Erskine appear in some form or not, it’s a safe bet that the series can be streamed on Prime Video for the foreseeable future.
