Retired NYPD Officer Dies Shoveling Snow for Church

A Long Island community has been mourning this week over former NYPD officer Roger McGovern, who died on Sunday when he shoveled snow for a local church during the major winter storm.

McGovern, 60, had a heart attack outside of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Floral Park, which he attended. The church will have a funeral Mass for him on Friday. Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Homes had a wake on Wednesday, and there’s a visitation on Thursday afternoon and evening at the funeral home.

McGovern, who served as an usher and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, volunteered to shovel before Mass because of the heavy snowfall. New York City received over 10 inches of snow during the winter storm last weekend.

“They said that he was at church and he had a seizure [and] by the time he got to the hospital, he passed,” McGovern’s friend, Kevin Troy, told CBS News 2. “He had spoken to the priest and said that he was going to go out and shovel the sidewalk for the parishioners so they could get in, and before he started shoveling, he had collapsed.”

Friday’s funeral is expected to draw many from both Our Lady of Victory parishioners and former NYPD colleagues. McGovern served with the NYPD until 2008.

“After a career spent in service to this city, Sergeant McGovern passed away while helping his community during the recent snowstorm,” the Sergeants’ Benevolent Association post on social media stated. “His dedication to others did not end with his retirement.”

“We extend our sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him,” the SBA statement continued. “May his memory be a blessing.”

McGovern was born in Ireland and came to the United States during childhood, and he grew up in Queens Village. He graduated from St. Francis Preparatory School and began his career with the NYPD afterward, where he retired as a sergeant.

He is survived by his wife, Finola, and daughters Ailish, Leah, and Dara. McGovern is also survived by Michael and Philomena McGovern, his parents. He is also survived by siblings Kevin McGovern, Tricia Dean, and Kathy McGovern-Szala.

NTD reached out to the NYPD and SBA for further comment on McGovern’s career and legacy.
