The Batman Part II has been making headlines as of late, and not for the most exciting, positive reasons. In addition to news of Matt Reeves’ script still not being finished, the 2026 release date was pushed back a full year to October 2027. However, the good news is that the highly-anticipated film is still well on its way, and it is set to begin production sometime next year. And as development continues on The Batman 2, a rumor has surfaced online that may blow the lid on the top-secret sequel and reveal the film’s main villain.
While on the Hot Mic podcast (via DC Film News), industry insider Jeff Sneider revealed that he’d heard previous speculation about Mr. Freeze forming part of The Batman Part II might just be true. The upcoming sequel takes place shortly after the events of The Penguin, which leads into the wintertime. That’s not enough reason to believe the rumor to be true, but the fact that Mr. Freeze’s name has been attached to rumors for over a year now may be a sign of what’s to come. That said, until Reeves actually completes the screenplay for The Batman 2, the following report should be filed under “take it with a grain of salt.”
“I think there may be a little be of truth to those Mr. Freeze rumors… an untested, unproven source reached out to suggest this.”
An interesting aspect to this rumor is that DC Studios co-head James Gunn, who is also overseeing The Batman sequel as an Elseworlds project, has yet to deny Mr. Freeze’s potential inclusion. He previously shut down rumors of a Mr. Freeze movie spinoff, as well as a Joker TV series. Dr. Victor Fries, who was infamously played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in Batman & Robin, may be considered by many too unreleastic of a villain for Reeves’ epic crime saga. Although The Batman director has maintained that villains will be as grounded as possible, he also did not discard some “fantastic” elements to them. Alas, Mr. Freeze, who is really just another Gotham City crime boss, could simply be a doctor looking to save his sick wife, Nora Fries, through any means necessary.
Have Any Villains Been Confirmed for ‘The Batman 2’?
Outside of the latest rumor, details surrounding The Batman Part II have been kept behind closed doors, especially when it comes to the villains. It’s already known that Collin Farrell will reprise his Emmy-nominated role as Oz Cobb aka Penguin in “five or six scenes” of the sequel. However, the main villain of The Batman 2 remains a mystery, while the names floating around are Mr. Freeze, Clayface (who’s getting his own DCU movie), and Hush, previously teased in the first film. Some have suggested that perhaps Barry Keoghan’s Joker could come into the spotlight after his cameo, but the actor hasn’t heard anything about the future of his role yet.

As fans anxiously wait for more details about The Batman Part II, behind-the-scenes development on the sequel has steadily moved forward despite the one-year delay. It’s been reported that it could begin shooting as soon as spring 2025, if not during the summer. Moreover, the award-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser will return for The Batman sequel, instead of doing the third installment of Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi franchise, Dune: Messiah. Meanwhile, Robert Pattinson and Collin Farrell are confirmed to return, but the rest of the cast remains uncertain.
