It wouldn’t be a season of Prime Video’s The Boys without Jack Quaid being covered in fake blood. Over the past four seasons of the hit superhero series, Quaid’s Hughie Campbell has been showered in guts and gore, launched into Billy Butcher’s (Karl Urban) revenge mission against the world’s “superheroes.” Filming is currently underway on the show’s fifth and final season, and the actor has teased fans by revealing that Season 5 will continue that long-running, and incredibly messy trend.
Quaid took to Instagram to give fans a behind-the-scenes look at The Boys‘ final season. “WORK’S BEEN GOING GREAT, YOU GUYS!” Quaid wrote along with a thumbs-up emoji, sharing a picture of himself splattered in fake blood all across his face. Surprisingly, the image Quaid shared is tame compared to some of the stuff Hughie has gone through in the show. The Boys Season 4 in particular was a tough one for fans of the character to watch, with some even arguing that showrunner Eric Kripke pushed the boundaries a little too far.
The comments under the post were hilariously on trend for Hughie’s character. “Give my man Hughie a break,” wrote one user, while another added, “It’s not The Boys unless Hughie is absolutely ensconced in blood.” Quaid returns alongside Urban, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Karen Fukuhara, Chace Crawford, Laz Alonso, and Tormer Capone for The Boys‘ fifth and final season. The show will also bring back the fan-favorite character, Soldier Boy, played by Supernatural star Jensen Ackles, who was thought to have died at the end of Season 3. Filming is still underway for the fifth season and a release date has not yet been announced.
‘The Boys’ Season 5 Will Take Shots at Recent Events
When it’s not drenching Hughie Campbell in blood and guts, The Boys is scathingly poking fun at current events, especially the state of the political system in the United States. It’s safe to say recent events have given the series a lot of new ammunition for its final season, and Eric Kripke has no qualms about making script alterations to incorporate those goings-on.
“Things adjust all the time. So, that doesn’t really scare us. You’re always rewriting these things right up until the day before they shoot, and sometimes, the day they shoot. So, we’re used to changing things as the world changes – but yes, we definitely adjust scripts as new events come to light.”

As much as Kripke might make small alterations to the script, the overall plot has been etched in stone since day one. The showrunner has known from the start that The Boys can only end one way… with a dramatic showdown between Homelander (Starr) and Butcher. “The big meta storyline of the series is these two forces of Homelander and Billy Butcher coming toward each other,” the showrunner explained. “Whatever the ending is, it has to heavily involve finally bringing that to a head with whatever disruption that entails.” If it’s anything like the source material, then fans are in for a bloody treat in The Boys Season 5.
