The Heartbreaking True Story Behind Netflix’s New Documentary

Scammers go to great lengths these days. There is no doubt about that. Everyone gets those highly unusual phone calls from a different country, odd-seeming text messages, or suspicious emails. It certainly works to some extent because stories about innocent people falling for deception can be found anywhere. So what if your long-lost birth mother emails you out of nowhere, heartfelt and all, but she is secretly one of the biggest con artists out there?

Well-known pastry chef Graham Hornigold knows everything about being in such an insane situation because he had to live and survive through it. Netflix‘s latest true-crime documentary, Con Mum, tackles all the twists and turns of Graham’s insane experience. It reveals how his biological mother, Dionne Hornigold, suddenly fulfilled his life-long dream of finding his mum but then ended up causing him the most pain he had ever felt and ruining his life in the process. Con Mum focuses on the most heartbreaking scam ever, and here is why.

Graham Hornigold’s Troublesome Past

Graham Hornigold’s mother, Dionne, left him after giving birth to him. He was raised by his father, who was an abusive alcoholic and turned Graham’s upbringing into a nightmare. When he was 18, he left his father and left the abuse. Graham had longed for parental love his whole life, but he never received it. So, when Dionne reached out to him, it was understandable that his emotions took over as he so badly wanted to believe that his mother’s return was real. 45 years of built-up emotions and the longing to turn his picture-perfect life with his mother into reality led Graham to look past any suspicious behavior, and understandably so.

The 10 Most Disturbing True Crime Series and Docuseries on Netflix

Some of these disturbing Netflix crime series have turned into popular cultural phenomena.

It would be wrong to say that Graham was naive or careless because he decided to trust his mother — someone who he idolized in his mind for his entire life. After cutting ties with his father to get away from a dysfunctional family and live a peaceful life, the idea of his mother as a good parent was the only thing he had left of his family. So, when Dionne unexpectedly entered his life, she acted as though she would soothe his wounds when, in reality, she knew she was adding poison to them.

Dionne Ruined Graham’s Family

When Dionne, who described herself as a multi-millionaire and illegitimate child of the former Sultan of Brunei, came into Graham’s life, she told him that she had terminal cancer and only six months to live. Because of this, she wanted Graham to join her in Switzerland, leaving his wife and newborn son behind for two months, where she showered him with luxurious things and made him believe that he would sign papers to take over all her bank accounts.

Netflix’s con artist documentary clearly shows how Dionne faked her cancer to separate Graham from his family and redirect his focus on herself. She needed to wrap him in the belief that she would provide him with generational wealth, and her only wish was to spend her last few days with him. Who would say no to that? Graham was put in an impossible position, so when he felt the urge to help his mother, at least at the end of her life, he lost sight of caring for his own family. The damage this caused was irreparable.

11 Gritty TV Dramas for True Crime Fans

Rooted in authenticity and led by washed-up protagonists, these gritty TV dramas remind you why truth is stranger than fiction.

Arguably the most heartbreaking moment in this shocking documentary is when the aftermath is revealed. Graham was absolutely in love and happily married to Heather, and their bliss reached its peak when they found out about their pregnancy. Dionne, one of the biggest con artists, came along and ruined everything. She began borrowing money from Graham, explaining that she was just trying to get access to her bank accounts abroad. Graham ended up in close to $400,000 in debt because of his mother scamming him. This financial damage and the whirlwind of emotions led to Graham and Heather’s divorce. Heather and her son moved back home to New Zealand, and Graham stayed behind in the UK, rarely seeing his son.

The Shock After the DNA Test in ‘Con Mum’

Dionne scamming Graham and causing him an immense amount of pain by separating him from his family and leaving him deep in debt is betrayal at its highest level, and her incredibly shocking scams could easily become the subject of a crime TV show. It doesn’t seem possible, but it still gets worse than that. It’s one thing to be deceived by a stranger, but it’s a different level of heartbreak when it is your family member. Through a DNA test, Graham received confirmation that Dionne was his biological mother. Finding his birth mother was always his biggest wish, his life-long dream, and it should have been one of the best moments of his life. Dionne’s behavior portrayed in this heartbreaking documentary, however, broke Graham’s heart all over again.

It’s unfathomable how someone would be able to seek out their child after 45 years solely to steal from them and leave them with nothing. If Con Mum proves one thing (apart from how ruthless of a con artist Dionne is), then it is that family doesn’t have to be defined by blood. Family can be chosen, and that’s a lesson that Graham learned from this painful experience. Con Mum is available to stream on Netflix.
