The Perfect ‘Reacher’ Action Thriller Follow-up Arrives Next Month

If you’ve been filling the Reacher void by rewatching old episodes, Netflix is about to give you a better option. Man on Fire, a seven-episode reboot of the franchise most people know from the 2004 Denzel Washington movie, is hitting the platform on April 30. Early buzz suggests the show has no intention of playing it safe. The source material has been around since 1980, the character has been adapted twice before, and yet Netflix is treating this like a fresh start.

While Prime Video’s Reacher universe keeps expanding – Season 4 has wrapped filming, with Alan Ritchson teasing it is “by far the best season we’ve had,” and a 2026 release confirmed – there’s still no specific date on the calendar. Netflix is stepping into that gap with something that fits into the same genre. There’s a broken soldier, a personal mission, and a lot of people who probably shouldn’t have gotten in the way.

What Is Netflix’s ‘Man on Fire’ About?

Yahya Abdul-Mateen ll in Man on Fire Netflix

Man on Fire is based on A.J. Quinnell’s 1980 novel and its first sequel, The Perfect Kill. It follows John Creazy, a former Special Forces mercenary who was once someone you wanted on your team. When the series begins, he’s far from that person. Creasy is now dealing with severe PTSD and trying to find a fresh start, until he gets pulled back in and is forced to fight harder than ever to protect a young girl.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II leads the series as Creasy, with Billie Boullet playing Poe Rayburn, a teenager dragged into the mess. Alice Braga stars as Valeria Melo, a driver with gang connections who becomes Creasy’s right hand. Bobby Cannavale and Scoot McNairy round out the cast as guest stars.

Showrunner Kyle Killen has said Abdul-Mateen brings everything the role needs. He’s got the physical presence, the quiet menace, and the ability to communicate volumes without saying much. That last part matters for a character like Creasy, who isn’t built for long speeches. The 2004 Washington movie was wrongfully panned by critics, grossed $130 million worldwide against a $60 million budget, yet the bar for this character is set high. Abdul-Mateen isn’t trying to imitate Washington, but he’s sure to carve out his own version entirely.

Creed II director Steven Caple Jr. helms the first two episodes. Additionally, the series is shifting the focus from both the novel’s Italian backdrop and the movie’s Mexico City to Brazil. It’s also using the long format to build Creasy’s psychology before the action kicks in.

‘Man on Fire’ Is the Perfect Show To Watch While You Wait for ‘Reacher’ Season 4

Reacher works because the premise is simple. A highly capable man with a personal code is dropped into a situation that demands he uses it. Man on Fire runs on the same engine. Creasy and Reacher aren’t the same character, but they occupy the same space in the genre. Former military, morally unambiguous, and very difficult to stop once they decide they need to do something.

Reacher holds a near-perfect 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, a score earned across three seasons that managed to improve on the last. Season 4 has no official release date yet, and with both Reacher Season 4 and Neagley filmed but unscheduled, Prime Video hasn’t given fans anything concrete to hold on to. Man on Fire’s April 30 is a real date, and it’s just two days away. That alone makes the show an ideal option for anyone craving the same kind of action right now.

The action genre is in a good place in 2026. Streaming platforms are competing hard for exactly this audience, and Man on Fire arrives with confidence. Whether it reaches the same level as Reacher is a question for after April 30. But one thing’s clear. It’s made for the same crowd, and it makes the wait for Reacher Season 4 a little manageable.
