Thursday horse racing tips

  • CHELMSFORD
    4.00: Flight Leader 7/1 each-way (1pt)
  • CHEPSTOW
    5.30: Tiger Tulip 11/1 each-way (1pt)
    6.30: Vafortino 15/2 each-way (1pt)
  • SANDOWN
    6.45: Henry Lawson 2/1 (1pt)

Flight Leader

Might well be the one the carries the top-weight in this field but went close two starts ago off 2lb higher in a tough Class 2 handicap at Chester, only beaten 3 lengths by a horse carrying 2st 1lb less.

Didn’t like the step up to 1m4f at Royal Ascot but has more to offer back down in trip and also back on the all-weather.

His sole race on artificial surface came at Deauville in August 2024 and has since only been seen three times, while also being gelded in the winter.

Sovereign Sea also appeals a lot for a place bet in whatever form that can come in, each-way or top finish bet as he’s placed 2nd three times on the all-weather and had a win on debut before proving himself over 1m2f at Newbury to go a close second to Burrito.

Something was amiss at York next time out under Will Fentiman, as he finished 12th of 12, also won by Burrito, but could bounce back now.

Tiger Tulip

Progressive filly that has won twice and placed second in her last three runs, coping well with each step up in the weights.

Could be ready for a challenge like this where she can try to make the most of her low weight against some higher-rated rivals.

Jockey Kevin Stott arrives here in great form and trainer Heather Main has seen two wins from ten too.

This four-year-old filly started 2025 off at a mark of 70, before dropping down to 64 and since then has won at 33/1, 22/1 and placed second at 12/1, proving that she shouldn’t be underestimated.

Vafortino

Quite a consistent horse for Kevin Philippart De Foy and this time Danny Muscutt takes the reigns for his return since last being seen in October.

That was a rare unplaced effort but it was the Group 1 Champions Sprint Stakes, over a distance he’s only tried three times in his career now.

Back to 7f will suit him greatly and there’s no reason he shouldn’t be able to at least place off this top-weight as he’s often up there at the finish.

Prior to that Group 1 he’d been showing great form, placing second in the Group 2 City Of York Stakes, going a decent third and sixth at Chester and Royal Ascot respectively – warrants each-way backing.

Henry Lawson

Corinth might be the heavy odds-on favourite but I’ve not been convinced enough by that debut to be confident he can improve and make the most of that experience here.

Not far behind in the odds is Henry Lawson who has a very interesting pedigree, half brother to Musical Act, also out of Poetic Charm but is also by Australia.

1m on debut should be no issue on the face of the pedigree and on paper in general could stand a great chance here for Charlie Appleby under Dougie Costello.
