A 3-year-old child is in critical condition after being pulled from a backyard pool in Chandler, Arizona, on Sunday evening, according to local authorities.
Just before 6 p.m., Chandler Police officers responded to a call reporting a possible drowning on an Ashley Drive property.
Officers arrived first on the scene and immediately began performing CPR on the child. Firefighters soon arrived and took over before the child was taken to Chandler Regional Medical Center, before being transferred to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where the toddler remains in critical condition.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and there are currently no new updates, a Chandler Police Department spokesperson told NTD News in an emailed statement.
Leading Cause of Death
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1 to 4 years old. Each year, approximately 4,000 people die from drowning, and for those on the autism spectrum disorder, such individuals are 40 times more likely to die from drowning.
In December, an 11-year-old girl died after trying to save a 12-year-old boy who fell through thin ice in Upstate New York. The children were at Washington Park Lake when the boy tried to walk across the frozen lake, the Albany Police Department said in a press release on Facebook.
When first responders arrived, they quickly located the girl but didn’t find any signs of the boy. A New York State Police underwater recovery team was later called out and found the boy several hours later.
In another case, a 13-year-old in Stockbridge, Georgia, rescued a toddler from the bottom of a swimming pool during a Mother’s Day weekend in 2021. Randy Brown, who had taken swimming lessons from a young age, was able to pull the child to safety, and CPR professionals on site revived the toddler.
