Two people were hospitalized Sunday afternoon after a small plane went down in a rural pasture in Union County, authorities said.
The Union County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded around 2:01 p.m. to the 5800 block of North Rocky River Road after receiving reports of a plane crash. When they arrived, they found the plane heavily damaged and the scene scattered across a cow pasture not far from Goose Creek Airport.
The plane came to rest in a field owned by Doug and Kathlyn Rowell, who were shocked to learn it had fallen on their property.
“We got a call from the young lady who lives in this house and she said a plane was in our pasture,” Kathlyn Rowell told WCNC. “We were just shocked.”
Doug Rowell said the plane had sustained severe damage. “Took off a wing and one wing is still intact,” he said.
Photos shared by the sheriff’s office showed the left side of the plane crumpled after the crash.
“We’re just happy everyone was safe, all the cows were safe, and they were able to get them to the hospital alive,” Kathlyn Rowell said. “Hopefully they’re faring well.”
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to assist at the scene and is awaiting the arrival of federal investigators. The Federal Aviation Administration will lead the investigation into the cause of the crash, according to the sheriff’s office.
NTD News has contacted the FAA and did not receive a response prior to publication.
As of Sunday evening, officials in North Carolina had not released the names or conditions of those injured in the Union County crash.
