Two Injured After Small Plane Crashes in North Carolina Cow Pasture

Two people were hospitalized Sunday afternoon after a small plane went down in a rural pasture in Union County, authorities said.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded around 2:01 p.m. to the 5800 block of North Rocky River Road after receiving reports of a plane crash. When they arrived, they found the plane heavily damaged and the scene scattered across a cow pasture not far from Goose Creek Airport.

According to the sheriff’s office, the passenger had been thrown from the plane upon impact. First responders took the passenger in an ambulance to Goose Creek Airport, where they were then airlifted to a hospital. The pilot was trapped inside the wreckage and had to be cut free by rescue crews before being taken by ambulance to the hospital, the sheriff’s office said in a Sunday post on Facebook.
The plane had taken off from Goose Creek Airport shortly before the crash, according to NBC News affiliate WCNC. The small private airfield in Indian Trail is often used for flight training and skydiving.

The plane came to rest in a field owned by Doug and Kathlyn Rowell, who were shocked to learn it had fallen on their property.

“We got a call from the young lady who lives in this house and she said a plane was in our pasture,” Kathlyn Rowell told WCNC. “We were just shocked.”

Doug Rowell said the plane had sustained severe damage. “Took off a wing and one wing is still intact,” he said.

Photos shared by the sheriff’s office showed the left side of the plane crumpled after the crash.

“We’re just happy everyone was safe, all the cows were safe, and they were able to get them to the hospital alive,” Kathlyn Rowell said. “Hopefully they’re faring well.”

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to assist at the scene and is awaiting the arrival of federal investigators. The Federal Aviation Administration will lead the investigation into the cause of the crash, according to the sheriff’s office.

NTD News has contacted the FAA and did not receive a response prior to publication.

Sunday’s crash follows a string of small plane crashes across the country in recent days. On Friday, a small plane carrying two people crash-landed at a golf course in Albuquerque, New Mexico, killing one person and seriously injuring another. The FAA confirmed that the crash involved a Columbia LC-41 aircraft and said the National Transportation Safety Board would investigate.

As of Sunday evening, officials in North Carolina had not released the names or conditions of those injured in the Union County crash.
