Vietjet, Vietnam’s largest privately-owned airline, has made a strategic move at the 2025 Paris Air Show, finalizing a landmark agreement with Airbus for 100 A321neo aircraft. The deal includes an option for an additional 50 units, underscoring Vietjet’s commitment to expanding its fleet and network on a global scale.
Expanding Its Network and Long-Haul Plans
Currently operating a fleet of over 100 Airbus aircraft, Vietjet is rapidly expanding its reach across Asia. This significant order will help the airline meet the growing demand for air travel and strengthen its ability to introduce new routes, including long-haul services to Europe and the Americas. The A321neo, known for its fuel efficiency and modern features, is central to the airline’s strategy for both short-haul and long-haul operations.
The A321neo is part of Airbus’ popular A320neo family and is known for its superior performance. Equipped with next-generation engines and aerodynamic enhancements, the A321neo provides over 20% better fuel efficiency than older models while reducing CO2 emissions and noise pollution by 50%. The aircraft’s spacious cabin also ensures enhanced comfort for passengers, making it a versatile choice for a range of flight lengths.
Commitment to Sustainable Growth and Fleet Renewal
This deal is a major step in Vietjet’s ongoing fleet modernization strategy, following a recent order for 20 Airbus A330neo wide-body aircraft. The A321neo’s advanced technology supports the airline’s sustainability objectives, capable of operating with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). With plans to reach 100% SAF compatibility by 2030, Vietjet is focusing on reducing its environmental impact while ensuring cost-effective operations.
In addition to its commitment to sustainability, the airline continues to rely on its primarily Airbus fleet, with two exceptions: regional jets from China. Although Vietjet has placed a large order for approximately 200 Boeing MAX aircraft, deliveries of these planes have not yet been completed.
Enhancing Operational Efficiency with Rolls-Royce and Honeywell
To further boost its operational capabilities, Vietjet has also secured an agreement with Rolls-Royce for the delivery of 40 Trent 7000 engines, which will power the airline’s A330neo fleet. This expands the airline’s total order to 80 Trent 7000 engines. To ensure their long-term performance, Vietjet has chosen Rolls-Royce’s TotalCare service, which offers comprehensive maintenance and monitoring for the engines.
Additionally, Vietjet has partnered with Honeywell for a five-year maintenance contract covering its 30 Airbus A330 aircraft’s 331-350 auxiliary power units (APUs). These APUs are essential for providing power during ground operations, and the new maintenance agreement will enhance the airline’s fleet readiness and overall operational efficiency.
Airbus Takes the Lead at Paris Air Show
The deal with Vietjet is one of several key announcements Airbus made at the 2025 Paris Air Show. The company secured over 100 aircraft orders from various global airlines, including notable agreements with Riyadh Air, AviLease, and LOT Polish Airlines. These orders, valued at nearly $20 billion, further solidify Airbus’ position as the leading aircraft manufacturer worldwide.
The A321neo continues to be a top performer for Airbus, with more than 7,000 units ordered from over 90 customers globally by the end of May 2025. The aircraft’s ability to use up to 50% SAF, with a target of achieving 100% SAF compatibility by 2030, aligns with the global push for greener aviation technologies.
Boeing’s Quiet Role at the Air Show
While Airbus continues to dominate at the Paris Air Show, Boeing has taken a quieter approach this year. The company’s focus is currently on addressing the aftermath of a recent investigation into the fatal crash of an Air India Boeing 787. Boeing also secured a substantial order during President Donald Trump’s Middle East tour, including Qatar Airways’ historic deal for 130 Boeing 787s and 30 Boeing 777Xs, with options for 50 additional aircraft.
Looking Ahead: Vietjet’s Strategic Expansion
Vietjet’s deal with Airbus marks a crucial step in the airline’s long-term growth strategy. The addition of 100 A321neo aircraft, along with the possibility of future expansion, positions Vietjet to continue its rapid growth in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. With a focus on modernizing its fleet and embracing sustainable practices, Vietjet is poised to offer passengers an efficient and eco-friendly flying experience, while expanding its reach to new markets across the globe.
