The grocery chain plans to transition ownership of 32 Winn-Dixie stores and eight Harveys Supermarkets in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Store closings are expected by year-end, with store conversions anticipated in early 2026.
After the process, The Winn-Dixie Company will operate about 130 conventional grocery stores and 140 liquor stores, primarily in Florida, with some locations in southern Georgia.
“For a century, Winn-Dixie has proudly called Florida home. Our story is built on the resilience and spirit of its people, and that foundation will guide our future,” said Anthony Hucker, chairman and CEO of Southeastern Grocers. “As we enter our next century as The Winn-Dixie Company – a brand-new 100-year-old company – we are accelerating growth where our roots run deepest.”
The rebranding to The Winn-Dixie Company will take effect in early 2026.
While divesting stores outside Florida, the grocer will expand within the state through acquisition and investment. The company finalized an agreement to purchase Hitchcock’s Markets locations in Alachua, Keystone Heights, and Williston, which will convert to Winn-Dixie stores beginning late 2025.
The Williston location at 434 E. Noble Ave. is expected to open in early December, preceding the closure of the nearby Winn-Dixie at 727 W. Noble Ave. Associates from the store that is closing will have opportunities to continue working at the new store. The Alachua and Keystone Heights stores are scheduled to open by summer 2026.
The grocer plans dozens of remodels and new store projects designed to modernize the facilities and “enrich the customer experience”. Upgrades include expanding the liquor store portfolio, growing the Own Brand product line, and adding third-party online grocery delivery and return kiosks.
The company’s iconic Lip Lickin’ Chicken will also return in early 2026.
SEG will maintain a presence in southern Georgia with stores in Brunswick, Folkston, Lake Park, St. Simons Island, and Valdosta.
“We are profoundly thankful to our associates and customers in these markets for their loyalty – for making Winn-Dixie and Harveys a meaningful part of their lives and trusting us to help nourish their families,” Hucker said. “We will do everything we can to support those who supported us, ensuring this transition reflects the gratitude and respect they deserve.”
Hucker will remain as chairman and CEO of The Winn-Dixie Company.
