International horror is increasingly carving out a niche for itself among American audiences. Hollywood has plenty of terrifying offerings of its own, but they often pale in comparison to the unique and chilling stories released overseas. South Korea is a top contender in the genre, and one of the country’s most celebrated directors is once again proving himself a master of the craft with an upcoming horror-tinged action thriller.
The latest South Korean hit comes from Yeon Sang-ho, the celebrated director behind Train to Busan. The 2016 film became an instant hit among international audiences, who were entranced by its marriage of emotional drama and spine-tingling horror. Yeon returned to his favored genre with Colony, which is set to be released on 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray combo pack and DVD on Dec. 15, 2026.
Yeon has a way with horror, and Colony is once again providing an outstanding example of the potential of his chosen genre. Many horror hits ditch rich storytelling and emotional plot points in favor of gore and jump scares, but Yeon takes a different approach. Colony, which had its world premiere at the Midnight Screenings section of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival on May 15, 2026, is once again pushing the boundaries of what makes a horror film truly great.
The film follows Se-jeong, a professor who is thrust into a bloody nightmare after a dangerous mutating virus is released at a biotech conference. The rapidly spreading virus prompts authorities to seal the building, trapping everyone inside with no escape. A small group of survivors fight to stay alive as victims of the virus undergo horrific mutations.
The Blu-ray combo pack includes a making-of featurette that provides a behind-the-scenes look at how Colony was created, along with a Q&A exploring Yeon’s process. It also includes a trio of trailers for the film, which include the original teaser, the U.S. version, and the international trailer.
