860 Pounds of Ohio Cheese Are Under Recall

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert about the voluntary recall of five cheese products sold in Ohio stores.

Potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) led the Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op facility in Middlefield, Ohio, to recall 100 percent Grass-Fed Pepper Jack Cheese, Horseradish Flavored Cheese, Farmers Cheese, Monterey Jack Cheese, and Copia Collective 100 percent Grass-Fed Pepper Jack Cheese, according to an Aug. 18 FDA alert.

Middlefield Original Cheese Co-op General Manager Nevin Byler declined to disclose which Ohio retailers are selling the cheese.

“It was 860 pounds of cheese,” Byler told NTD.

The recalled products were produced on June 16, June 24, and July 16 and distributed between July 14 and Aug. 7.

The FDA said the recall was initiated based on product testing by the company.

“Production was suspended while the company investigated the source of the contamination which was determined to be from environmental contamination that migrated to food-contact areas of the production process,” the FDA stated. “There have been no reports of illness to date associated with consumption of these products.”

Customers with this product in their possession are urged to dispose of it or return it to the retail location during normal business hours for a refund.

Lm is a disease-causing bacterium that can be found in many places, including soil, water, sewage, rotting vegetation, and animals, according to the FDA website.

The FDA added that Lm can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” the FDA said.

This isn’t the summer season’s first Lm recall.

Last week, the FDA issued an alert about the voluntary recall of four French cheese products sold at Wegmans grocery stores in 10 states due to potential contamination with Lm.

The recall is applicable to Wegmans 8.8-ounce Medium Camembert Soft Ripened Cheese, Wegmans 1-pound Assorted Cheese Flight, Wegmans 10-ounce Grilling Camembert with Tapenade & Roasted Tomatoes, and Wegmans 13-ounce Caramel Apple Pecan Topped Brie Cheese, which were sold between July 1 and Aug. 12.

The recalled dairy products were sold in the cheese department at Wegmans stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

Last month, concerns about Lm contamination led Newly Weds Foods to recall breadcrumb products contained in Reser’s Fine Foods Ham Salad and Molly’s Kitchen Ham Salad.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said in a July 27 public health alert that the problem was discovered when Reser’s Fine Foods determined that they had used FDA-regulated breadcrumb products that were subject to an FDA recall due to possible contamination with Lm.
