Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was transported by ambulance to a Washington, D.C.-area hospital on Tuesday after suffering an allergic reaction, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin told NTD that Noem was taken to the hospital “out of an abundance of caution” and is “alert and recovering.”
Noem, 53, was appointed by President Donald Trump as Homeland Security secretary just days after his second-term election victory and was confirmed by the Senate in late January. She previously served as South Dakota’s governor and as a member of Congress representing the state.
Noem has been tasked with carrying out President Donald Trump’s agenda to crackdown on illegal immigration.
