Fury Road’ Is Already Leaving Netflix

Tom Hardy has starred in some great action movies in his career, but none are as explosive and high-octane as George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road. The motor-headed action flick saw Hardy take over from Mel Gibson as Max Rockatansky, with Charlize Theron as the Imperator Furiosa (who later received a prequel movie starring Anya Taylor-Joy). Even with Hardy’s more recent hits, like Netflix’s own Havoc and Guy Ritchie’s MobLand series, Mad Max: Fury Road is still seen as one of the British actor’s best works, not just in the action genre. When it was added to Netflix earlier this year, fans were overjoyed to experience the film once again on a new streaming home. But, just like the life expectancy of a War Boy, its time on Netflix will be short. That’s right, Mad Max: Fury Road leaves Netflix very soon.

You’ve got just a few short weeks to stream Mad Max: Fury Road on Netflix, as it drives away from the streamer on September 9th. Directed by Miller, who co-wrote the script with Brendan McCarthy and Nick Lathouris, the film sees Max (Hardy) traverse the Wasteland of Australia after he’s taken as a prisoner by the War Boys of the cruel dictator, Immortan Joe. Max is caught between the Immortan’s dictatorial rule and Furiosa’s attempt to escape his clutch and free his captive wives. The official synopsis reads:

“Years after the collapse of civilization, the tyrannical Immortan Joe enslaves apocalypse survivors inside the desert fortress the Citadel. When the warrior Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) leads the despot’s five wives in a daring escape, she forges an alliance with Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), a loner and former captive. Fortified in the massive, armored truck the War Rig, they try to outrun the ruthless warlord and his henchmen in a deadly high-speed chase through the Wasteland.”

To call Mad Max: Fury Road a success would be an understatement. The film was a critical darling when it was released in 2015. It holds a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 97%, with a strong audience rating of 86%. The film won six Oscars in 2016, and was nominated for Best Directing for Miller, and Best Motion Picture of the Year (which ultimately went to Spotlight).

What’s Going On With the ‘Mad Max’ Franchise?

Despite being a fan-favorite post-apocalyptic action series, the Mad Max franchise has always struggled when it comes to new projects. It took Miller over two decades to get Fury Road made, with another nine years before Furiosa hit theaters in 2024.

Building up to Fuirosa‘s theatrical release, Miller revealed his grand plans for the future of the Mad Max saga. However, when Furiosa flopped at the box office, those plans, which included a sequel to Fury Road and a Max Rockatansky prequel film, were put on hold. It is currently unclear whether Warner Bros. will let George Miller loose in the Wasteland for a third time, as, despite being a fan favorite, the Mad Max franchise just doesn’t put bums in seats.
