Saturday horse racing tips
- DONCASTER
1.50: Gewan 13/8 (1pt)
3.40: Carmers 5/1 each-way (2pts) - LEOPARDSTOWN
3.20: Benvenuto Cellini 6/4 (1pt)
4.25: Cercene 4/1 (0.5pt)
5.30: White Birch 6/1 each-way (1pt)
Gewan
Oxagen won by a mile in novice company last time out under Luke Catton, who claimed 5lb but now Oisin Murphy is back on up after scooping plenty of success already this week here.
Gewan won well ahead of Italy in Group 3 company though and will take some beating as the grey forged clear to land the Acomb Stakes and appeals a lot on reappearance.
Carmers
Tom Marquand is stepping in for Ryan Moore on Scandinavia in the St Leger while Sean Levey takes the mount on Lambourn as Christoph Soumillon heads to Leopardstown on Delacroix instead.
I like Carmers for this though, the Paddy Twomey rarely sends runners to Britain so it’s worth keeping note when he does.
This tough stamina test suits this horse well and may not have the big Group 1 victories to his name that the other two have but may well do after the race at a very appealing each-way price.
Carmers has won three of his four races so far only missing out last time to Pride Of Arras at York and remains very unexposed over a distance he seems to thrive at.
He will of course need to improve to beat the likes of the Derby winner but has been lightly campaigned, even finishing ahead of Lambourn last time out and winning ahead of Scandinavia at Royal Ascot.
Benvenuto Cellini
It’s a busy weekend for Aidan O’Brien to not have his usual jockey Ryan Moore in the saddle.
The Irish trainer has the two frontrunners for this five-strong field in the Group 2 Champions Juvenile Stakes.
The two Benvenuto Cellini and Montreal both won maidens last time out over 1m.
Christophe Soumillon boards Montreal who’s drifted a tough in favour of Benvenuto Cellini who appeals a lot on pedigree alone let alone trainer and previous form.
The Frankel colt is a full brother to Giselle who placed just behind Whirl in the Group 3 Stud Stakes at the Curragh last year and even won the Oaks Trial at Lingfield by nine lengths, before placing fifth in the Oaks itself at Epsom.
Cercene
Can go really well at the finish, just like she did to land the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.
4/1 currently having been as high as 8/1 earlier on and has a much bigger chance than many given her consistent Group form.
White Birch
Now rated 126, the three-year-old colt Delacroix has proven he’s a Group 1 winner with that Coral Eclipse victory before going close to Ombudsman in the rematch at York.
Het gets 6lb from his older rivals so he’s got that potential to go again but is drifting in the market. After five tough races will the likes of experience prevail?
Anmaat, White Birch and Shin Emperor have only had two races this season.
The latter – placed third behind Economics in this last year at 16/1 when three-years-old so has a solid chance.
I think White Birch is the play given his exceptional form over 1m2f, consistency once again playing a huge part, given his 6/1 price providing value.
He was just under two lengths off of Los Angeles in Group 1 Gold Cup in May, after going a neck behind that horse earlier that month in the Mooresbridge.
Prior to that he scored a three timer at the track and gets plenty of time off between seasons, going well fresh each time.
