Netflix’s long-awaited adaptation of the iconic video game franchise Assassin’s Creed just got a major update. The streamer has been hard at work on the series, which has a lead cast in place. Now, it has been revealed who will be directing the first season, and he is an award-winning TV veteran.
According to Variety, Netflix has hired Johan Renck to direct the upcoming live-action Assassin’s Creed series in development at the streamer. The filmmaker is known for directing episodes of Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and Chernobyl. He also directed the 2024 Netflix sci-fi film Spaceman, which starred Adam Sandler in the lead role. Renck won two Emmys for his work on HBO’s critically acclaimed drama Chernobyl, written by The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin. It’s unclear how many episodes of Assassin’s Creed there will be, but per Variety‘s report, he is the sole director attached to helm the series.
The latest update on Assassin’s Creed comes after it was announced that the main cast would be comprised of Toby Wallace (Finestkind), Lola Petticrew (Trespasses), Zachary Hart (Slow Horses), and Laura Marcus (Death by Lightning). Expect the show to revolve around the centuries-long battle between the Templar Order and the Assassin Brotherhood. In the games, a protagonist in the present time travels to an ancestor’s past via memories using VR technology called the Animus. This allows them to embody an Assassin in their specific time period, revealing new secrets behind the ongoing fight between the warring organizations. Read the show’s official logline:
