Lady Fermoy was Princess Diana’s grandmother, making her William and Harry’s great-grandmother, was more well-known for her role as a lady-in-waiting to the Queen Mother. As well as being her lady-in-waiting, Lady Fermoy was also Queen Elizabeth’s close friend.
Royal expert Hugo Vickers wrote in Lady Fermoy’s obituary in The Independent in 1993: “Effortlessly polite to all comers, they acted as a team, and every afternoon, at the appointed hour, the Queen Mother’s courtiers took tea together to mull over the events of the day.”
He continued: “As early as 1937, the lady-in-waiting to Queen Ena of Spain complimented Queen Elizabeth on being surrounded by some of the nicest women in England: ‘the sort of women who ride in buses, pay their bills and are nice to old servants’.”
While she was born in Scotland, Lady Fermoy – who was known to be a talented pianist – spent much of her later life in and around Clarence House in London, where the Queen Mother lived.

It is not known whether Diana, Princess of Wales ever visited the home, which her grandmother moved out of when Diana was a young girl.
