Will Nicolas Cage join the MCU? It doesn’t seem like his priority right now, and it hasn’t been for a while, as a recently resurfaced interview clip has reminded everyone. Despite previously playing Ghost Rider in two Marvel movies, and playing a Spider-Man variant in Prime Video’s new series, Spider-Noir, Cage has not made an appearance in the MCU. Despite some people feeling there is a necessity for every actor to consider a role in the mighty Marvel Universe, in a clip from a 2023 interview Cage made it clear that he really doesn’t need it as much as fans maybe want to see it.
While at the Miami Film Festival in 2023, Angelique Jackson, Variety‘s senior entertainment writer who moderated his panel, said to Cage, “We need to get you into the MCU!” In his usual style, Cage’s reply was as Nic Cage as you would hope. He said:
“Oh me? Yeah, I guess I’m not in the MCU am I? I don’t need to be in the MCU. I’m Nic Cage!”
The clip recently resurfaced on X, leading many to once again speculate on what role could bring Cage into the MCU, and which Marvel role he should be allowed to take on next. While some suggested he should get to play Ghost Rider for a third time, with all the R-rated elements that didn’t make it into his previous movies, others feel he would make a great Gambit – although that role is finally being occupied by Channing Tatum at present. It seems that despite his fleeting appearance as Superman in the DCEU’s The Flash, Cage probably isn’t in a rush to join the MCU.
Nicolas Cage Really Does Not Need the MCU
It is hard to argue with Nicolas Cage on the matter of whether he “needs” to be in the MCU. As some have pointed out, Cage is almost his own MCU, many years of releasing up to five movies across several different genres.
At the start of his career, Cage logged some of his best reviews early before spending almost two decades swaying from several panned flops to mega-budget hits, the latter of which included Con-Air, Face/Off, and National Treasure. However, in the last decade, Cage has found a later career groove that has resulted in some of the best movies of his entire career, usually playing very unconventional characters.
From his truffle-hunting character in Pig, to playing himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Dracula in Universal’s Renfield, and his intensely creepy villain in Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs, it often seems that the more ludicrous and off the wall a character is on the page, the better it works with Cage playing it. His next role sees him playing a very different version of Spider-Man in Spider-Noir, a new series based on Marvel’s “Spider-Man Noir” comics, which sees Cage playing a former superhero in the 1930s who is clearly troubled by past traumas that he must overcome to once again become the hero he needs to be.
Other upcoming roles for Cage include playing notorious mob boss Carlo Gambino in a new biopic from Face/Off director John Woo, action-thriller The Best Pancakes in the Country, starring as NFL coach and commentator John Madden in an Amazon sports biopic, and in sequels to his 2005 movie Lord of War and a possible sequel to Face/Off, which is in development.
