Release Window, Cast & Everything We Know

With only a single episode left in the inaugural season of HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, all eyes turn toward the next chapter of the hit Game of Thrones prequel series. While the Season 1 finale, “The Morrow,” will undoubtedly inform the direction of Season 2, readers of the George R.R. Martin novel series may have a pretty good idea of what transpires next in Westeros.

As expected, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 will adapt the second novella in Martin’s three-part Tales of Dunk & Egg series. Although the premise understandably remains shrouded ahead of Season 1’s conclusion, crucial details about the next chapter in the epic fantasy series are starting to circulate. Between the release date, episode count, new characters, actors, and more, let’s dig into the most crucial details known so far about the next part of the story.

‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 2 Has Been Confirmed

Dunk and Egg in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 Episode 3 HBO

Premiering on HBO and HBO Max on Jan. 18, 2026, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place one century before the events of the epic fantasy series Game of Thrones. Based on George R.R. Martin’s three-part novella series Dunk & Egg, Season 1 adapts the first story, The Hedge Knight. Less barbarous and more humorous than Game of Thrones, the series traces the amusing travails of Hedge Knight commoner Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey), aka Dunk, and his obedient squire, Aegon Targaryen, aka Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell).

Egg and Dunk set out for the town of Ashford to compete in a jousting tournament and find the glory that eluded Dunk’s predecessor. The two stick up for each other and become friends along their journey, culminating in a brutal trial by combat in which two groups of seven knights must battle on horseback. Egg and Dunk recruit several knights to join the tournament, the conclusion of which will air on Feb. 22, 2026.

In November 2025, two months before Season 1 premiered, HBO announced that it had renewed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for Season 2. Although HBO is committed to adapting the first three published novellas in the series, in January 2026, series co-creator and executive producer Ira Parker told THR that Martin had given him 12 Dunk & Egg stories that he hopes to adapt at some point.

With Season 1 adapting the first novella in the Dunk & Egg series, it makes logical sense for Season 2 to follow the events of the second book. Indeed, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 will be based on Martin’s 2003 novella The Sworn Sword.

This time, Dunk and Egg join Ser Eustace Osgrey, an older knight living in poverty in the Reach. When a devastating drought threatens to damage the stream that nourishes Osgrey’s crops in Standfast, Dunk and Egg confront the wicked Lady Rohanne Webber of Coldmoat (aka The Red Widow), who fights tooth and nail to control the water rights in Standfast.

The feud escalates when the hot-tempered knight in Osgrey’s legion, Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield, cuts the face of one of The Red Widow’s servants. As Dunk learns a dark secret about Eustace’s past, the action culminates in a savage trial by combat as Dunk faces off with The Red Widow’s champion fighter, Ser Lucas Longinch. Although the TV adaptation strays a bit from the novella, viewers can expect this basic premise when A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms returns for Season 2. The real question is, who will play the key new characters?

In addition to Claffey and Ansell returning as Dunk and Egg, American-English actor Lucy Boynton (Sing Street, The Politician) has been cast as Lady Rohanne Webber of Coldmoat, aka The Red Widow, in A Knight in the Seven Kingdoms Season 2. In addition to battling for control of the water rights in Standfast, Lady Rohanne must also marry a fifth husband before the two-year anniversary of her father’s death, or else she will lose a cousin.

With plenty to gain and lose, Lady Rohanne is poised to take a significant role in the next chapter of the hit Game of Thrones prequel. Beginning her career as a child actor, Boynton is a versatile and accomplished performer whose most recent TV credit was A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story in 2025.

Besides Boynton, a handful of actors appear to have been added to the cast of Seven Kingdoms 2, but their roles have yet to be revealed. According to a post on X from fan account @House the Dragons, they include Paul Chahidi (The Night Manager), Kwaku Mills (Extraordinary), Steven Hartley (Miss Scarlet), Mimi Joffroy (The Devil’s Hour), and Craig Parkinson (Grace).

The Episode Count and Release Window For ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 2

Egg in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 Episode 3 HBO

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 consisted of six episodes, released weekly every Sunday evening (save for the Super Bowl). Season 1 premiered on HBO and HBO Max on January 18th and is slated to conclude on February 22nd. Looking ahead, a similar release schedule is expected when Season 2 arrives sometime in 2027. The second season will also feature six episodes, with one released each Sunday.

This aligns with HBO’s vision for the hit literary-fantasy drama, with EVP and Head of Drama Francesca Orsi stating in 2023 that the show would run “Ideally year-to-year and arcing out a three-season series, which maps out the three novellas that George wrote” (via Deadline).

To stay on track and ensure one new season is released each calendar year, Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed back-to-back, with the latest chapter set to enter production in Belfast in March 2026.
