Beyond the Spider-Verse’ Team Teases First Plot Details

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is finally in place for a Jun. 2027 release, concluding the thrilling animated story of Miles Morales’ Spider-Man and countless other web-slingers. Following up on the thrilling narrative laid out in 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, this movie will kick off with Miles stuck in a different universe while running from the Spider Society, all as Gwen Stacy and her team search the multiverse to find him. Considering the cliff-hanger ending fans saw at the end of the last movie, questions have run rampant about where this hit saga would go for Miles’ final adventure in this universe.

Finally, after years of waiting and teases, the creative team behind this threequel has pulled back the curtain on what fans can expect to see from Miles and the gang next year. Speaking with Gizmondo while promoting Project Hail Mary, Beyond the Spider-Verse writers/producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller admitted that the story “at one point…was one movie,” but the story got to be so big that it was separated into two films so that the arc could be completed the right way:

“At one point it was one movie, but there was too much movie there, so it was separated into two. But then, once you looked at that second half of a movie, you’re like ‘Well, that’s like not just a story arc that has a beginning, middle, and end.’

Lord explained that this story is about a family being broken and the way “you put them back together.” Putting immense pressure on themselves, Miller explained that they want “to outdo [themselves] each time and see things that you haven’t seen before” with each new movie, hoping to deliver the biggest Spider-Verse film yet:

Lord: “We know where it’s headed, but we need to understand better what’s happening in the middle. And we came upon a really wonderful notion, which is when your family is broken apart by your calling, your talents, how do you put them back together? How do you have it all?”

Miller: “We put the most pressure on ourselves. There’s no one that puts more pressure on us than ourselves, wanting to outdo ourselves each time and see things that you haven’t seen before and make it feel like something you’ve never experienced before. And so, trying to get something that is as worthy as the previous two has been the driver.”

Considering how big hits the first two Spider-Verse movies became, getting an update on Beyond the Spider-Verse is certainly an exciting prospect. From what fans already know based on the end of the last movie, Shameik Moore (Miles Morales) and Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy) are set to play the leading roles once again, going up against Jason Schwartzman’s increasingly powerful villain, The Spot. Gwen’s last scene also teased the return of Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), Pavitr Prabhakar (Karan Soni), Lyla (Greta Lee), Peter Porker (John Mulaney), and Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage).

Miles was last seen tied up to a punching bag and facing his Earth-42 doppelganger, Jharrel Jerome’s version of Miles Morales, who became the Prowler in this universe. While the third movie is expected to pick up where the last one left off, things will only get more intense from there as The Spot unleashes his brand of mayhem across multiple universes, likely including Miles’ original home universe.

With still more than a year left until Beyond the Spider-Verse premieres in theaters, a first trailer is not expected to be released until later in 2026. Even so, with this first tease from Lord and Miller, fans have the idea in their heads of this film being about Miles trying to keep his family together, found and biological. Considering his father is in danger if he is named Captain, and with Spider-Man 2099 and more coming after him to keep his father from dying, the stakes could not be higher when Miles thwips back onto the big screen.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will swing into theaters on Jun. 18, 2027.
