The U.S. Secret Service is seeking police officers to join its Uniformed Division and is offering a $75,000 recruitment bonus.
In a March 13 social media post, the Secret Service wrote, “If you’re in law enforcement and ready for the next level or if you are thinking about a career in law enforcement, the Secret Service is looking for Police Officers—and offering a $75K recruiting incentive. Apply now and you could also be eligible for an exclusive employment event that can speed up your hiring process by 120 days!”
According to the Secret Service website, the initiative is aimed at experienced law enforcement professionals or those considering a career as a Uniformed Division Officer.
The Uniformed Division provides security for the White House complex, the vice president’s residence at the Naval Observatory, the Treasury Department building, and foreign diplomatic missions in Washington, D.C.
A $75,000 recruitment bonus is available for new hires in several roles, including police officers assigned to counter-sniper, emergency response, and canine explosives-detection teams, as well as criminal investigators on the HAMMER (Hazardous Agent Mitigation & Medical Emergency Response) and counter-assault teams.
According to the U.S. Secret Service, its officers “embody honor, integrity and a commitment to excellence” in protecting facilities and venues for U.S. Secret Service protectees.
Candidates face strict eligibility requirements. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 20 years old at the time of application and under 40 at referral, and in excellent physical condition.
Additional requirements include passing a physical abilities test, completing interviews, a written exam, qualifying for top secret clearance, and undergoing a background investigation that includes a driving record check, drug screening, credit check, medical exam, and polygraph tests.
According to the job posting, the salary range for a Uniformed Division officer is $77,987 to $134,165 per year.
“The Secret Service employs approximately 3,200 special agents, 1,300 Uniformed Division officers, and more than 2,000 other technical, professional, and administrative support personnel,” states its website.
The Secret Service is one of the nation’s oldest federal investigative law enforcement agencies, founded in 1865 as a branch of the U.S. Treasury Department.
The agency was created to fight rampant counterfeiting of U.S. currency after the Civil War, when up to half the money in circulation was believed to be fake.
In 1901, the Secret Service took on another role of protecting the president. According to the agency’s website, its mission is now twofold: protecting the president, vice president, and other top officials, and investigating crimes against the nation’s financial infrastructure.
